Transfer euro savings account back to UK

I'm an Irish national, living in the UK and looking to buy a property here in the next 6-12 months. I have €33,000 life savings sitting in a bank account in Ireland, which I need to transfer to the UK. I'm considering using Wise (formerly Transferwise), but am nervous about getting the best rate. Any alternative recommendations or advice for transferring euros into the UK?   :)

I have used Wise ( Transferwise ) for years.
They have consistently given one of the best exchange rate on the market.
They give a very clear indication as to the rate of exchange on their website.
But of course you have to watch what the exchange rates are doing.
There have been some quite dramatic movements both up & down over the last month or two.
The rate is against you at the moment I am afraid.
Consider moving maybe 5000 euro at a time to smooth out the ups & downs.

You could consider Starling Bank. It's an app based current account and they also let you have a Euro account.

You could hold your €33,000 in the Euro account until the exchange rate is in your favour then transfer it into the GBP account. They charge 0.4% which is the same as TransferWise.

Also you'd have the benefits of having Starling Bank account, the GBP current account allows you to use the debit card abroad fee free for cash and spending. You may have a use for the Euro account and debit card too in future.  https://www.starlingbank.com/

Only thing to check is if there'd be a cost to get your €33,000 out of your Irish account into the Starling Euro account.

Keep an eye on the rates as the pound has been getting stonger recently.

  • I look into the difference between transferring €200,000 from Ireland to the UK into my Barclays Euro account or via Moneycorp and it was cheaper doing it through the bank by a few hundred euros.

What about the cost of converting the euros to GBP by Barclays..?
