Accused of stealing

’ve been accused of stealing using the self service tills at Tesco. I work there which makes it even worse. I have used these types of tills a few times and unfortunately a member of staff said I was stealing as few items didn’t scan, which I didn’t realise at the time hadn’t gone thru . Has anyone else been through this and what questions will they ask?
thanks

How did you not realise that they didn't scan? You get a warning when the weight of the items on the scales does not match the items that you scanned through. Did you use your staff privileges to bypass this? Keep in mind that they will probably be able to produce CCTV footage of what actually happened along with logs from the tills (you may even ask for this if you feel this will show you are not at fault).5

I'm sorry but if things haven't scanned you know it.6

this. the price also shows when the item is scanned. it is virtually impossible to miss it. you could claim to miss one item but not a few.GHolmesAdmin said:I'm sorry but if things haven't scanned you know it.
we did legitimately miss one item some years ago at the self service till. we didn't pay attention to the prices being logged and they were underwear and socks that were being scanned so the weight did not get flagged up. but the staff noticed it and was not happy with us when we told her that we did not realise the item did not scan. however, she let us off and did not take it further. since then i have paid special attention as i don't want to get into trouble.0 -
You'll certainly need to explain how you (especially as a member of staff) could have 'not realised'.marlene1967 said:’ve been accused of stealing using the self service tills at Tesco. Personally try not to use the self service tills or the handheld scanners that itemise and add each item as you go.marlene1967 said:’ve been accused of stealing using the self service tills at Tesco. They will want customers to fill the shelves next. But basically I would rather have employees in a job.
But when I am forced to use self scan it beeps as each item is recorded. You have audible and visual notifications.
To miss a few? items and being an employee will be very hard to justify?
Has this fellow member of staff actually officially reported this or just accused you?
How long have you worked there?

Really they're just going to ask how it was possible to miss scanning multiple items. Whether they believe you or not will determine your employment continuing. Are you a member of a union? You should speak to your rep if so.0

I try not to use them as they always go wrong.
In Asda once queuing for the cashier, the family in front of me fed up of waiting said they were going to the self scan as it was cheaper!
I did make a member of staff aware, but I assume that it's a common occurrence, but thinking about it I wonder (as an aside) if the reduced staff costs on self service offset a possible uplift in shoplifting losses?
But I think it would be hard to get away with, Sainsbury's and Asda now seem to have visible cameras and you can see yourself, I would have thought Tesco would have some form of surveillance too?Make £2023 in 2023 (#36) £3479.30/£2023

It can happen when your mind is somewhere else, under stress, in a hurry and these machines can play up. To miss more than one means you are completely not paying attentionGHolmesAdmin said:I'm sorry but if things haven't scanned you know it.
I always mess mine up We double, treble check one by one as me and my husband both worry about that and then we ensre we got the receipt.1 -

It can happen and I've posted my reasons in my previous post a minute ago.
Only you know the exact facts. Are they accusing you of doing this on one machine, more than one, or more than once over several days, etc. Then weigh up what they are saying, the mistake/s you made by unwittingly missing products/s.
The bottom line. You are innocent and made an innocent mistake, therefore, if I was in your shoes, I would take it right the way to court and not even accept a reprimand/etc.
I'd be grateful on a bit more info as some stores do have cctv above tills, etc.
