Cashing in premium bonds after death

My mother has recently passed away and myself and brother have decided to cash in the premium bonds and have sent off the necessary paperwork to them ie death certificate and notification form. They did not require probate(although we do have it if needed) They have returned the death certificate but have not stated how long it takes for them to return the money. Can anyone who has been in this position say? it is very difficult to get through to them on the phone. It is not a huge amount but is is £9k.Thanks

Last time I did this (December 2019) it took 15 calendar days from posting the claim forms with the Grant of Probate until the cash was received in my account.0

I agree, it was quite a short time for the money to be in the account, although I did it a few years ago. NS&I seem quite efficient.0

Sorry for your loss. My Mum passed away on 1 November. I wrote to them on 14/15 November with death certificate and received the money on 3 December.0

How long is it currently taking to cash premium bonds after a death? Is it taking longer because of the pandemic?0

The pandemic happened 15 months ago, they can't keep using that as an excuse. Still waiting on my money 3 weeks after sending off the grant of probate and form. They've returned my probate certificate but still no money. 6 other banks and Lloyds shares all done and dusted within 10 days max.

I doubt many similar organisations have seen the growth in customers NS&I PB have over the pandemic.
“Premium Bonds have become increasingly popular among those savers who have had more money to set aside over the last 14 months since the country's first lockdown. The amount held in them has risen by more than a fifth between March 2020 and this month to £107.4billion.”

Took me 6 weeks and many phone calls to even get the 1st form:after my DH died in April
.Completed an returned that ,form states they will respond in 5 days ,Many many phone calls later was told bereavement service outsourced to Chennai which was in lockdown ,they could see the amount on their screen but wouldn’t tell me total until the form was processed, didn’t know when but definitely needed probate £20k+) but wouldn’t say exact figure which I needed for probate from .
At my insistence they raised a complaint but told me it would be rejected as “ outside their control “ !I was .
form finally turned up last week, now I can get probate and then do battle to get the money
Absolutely hopeless ,
DH won £25 last month but I can’t pay it in as the banks have all been more efficient and helpful so no accounts in his name !0 -
NS&I told me in a letter last week that they won't require Confirmation (probate) to release my late DM's funds of £26,400. As I said in a different thread on the same topic that decision MAY be based on the fact that I held POA over her NS&I account. Her account details have now gone from my NS&I screen. No monies yet...0
