Hi
I bought a tv for £650 oct 2018 and 2yrs 4 months later I have no pic but sound, I spoke to the manufacturer but they said they only give 1yr and to go to my retailer so I spoke to them and they also said they only give 1yr warranty and they gave me a name to take the tv to for repair. I've read up on consumer rights etc and it's a bit vague but does say a new tv should at least last 3-4 yrs and I dont need to buy a warranty etc
I spoke back to my retailer and they said well done for reading consumer rights but it doesnt apply in their case,  I also spoke to resolve who spoke to the retailer and cos resolve is a 3rd party they wouldn't entertain them
I'm trying to find out if I have a case
Before I thrown the tv in the bin

Please help TIA

Paul

Who did you buy from and was it new ?
2 years under Consumer Rights the vendor may ask you to prove your case via an independent report .
If found in your favour vendor has right to repair replace or refund less 2 years usage .

Warranty is an extra subject to T&C  its not the law .manufacturer can decide what warranty covers or not .
  • Hi
Yes bought brand new and argos
And its the 2yrs 4months point
  • I've also looked into the brand tv type and it's a common fault apparently with those tv's

You need to pay to get it inspected.  If the fault is not down to misuse, go back to Argos and ask them to repair, replace or refund you.  They can choose.  A two year old TV bought for £650 might be worth a refund of £300, perhaps?  They would also have to pay you the cost of the inspection.
  • I know that Argos (like Currys) is one of those retailers that get a lot of stick on here, but (again like Currys!) I've never had any problems because of Argos acting unreasonably.  I'm surprised that they would simply tell the OP a blatent lie that consumer rights "doesn't apply in their case".  A lie that has no leg to stand on!

I can't help wondering if the OP has misunderstood what they have been told or is inadvertantly missing out part of the story?  Perhaps the OP was not the original purchaser?

Wouldn't surprise me, Argos do their very best to deter you for using your rights, Trading Standards should be taking action against these big companies with their misleading practices.

OP Google CEO email and send an email to the Argos address there with the Sainsburys Executive Office (who own Argos) cc'd in.

The retailer can ask you to obtain a report to show the that the issue is due to the internal components failing which would show the goods did not conform to the contract in terms of durability.

If the report shows as such they should repair, replace or refund with a refund reduced to account for usage (their first offer will likely be low, always worth counter-offering). They would also be required to refund the cost of the report.

I know it's not the advice you are asking for, but have you tested whether it has audio output options such as a headphone socket? If so, try some headphones with it, and if this works then it tells you that it's just the internal speaker that is not working, as opposed to the TV's full audio circuitry. So then you have got options to bring it back into action using a sound bar, or by connecting it to the Aux In of any standard Hi-fi/speaker setup.

It's the other way around.  OP has sound but no picture.

Good test for the opposite situation, though.

Do you have a direct feed from your aerial to the TV or does this go to a recorder or other device and then a feed from there to your set?
If the TV is fed by a SCART or HDMI lead, it would be worth removing these then refitting them to make sure that they are correctly inserted as a loose lead can easily cause loss of either picture or sound.
If there is a lead, trying a different one would advisable just in case it's knackered.
