Roundhay is popular family wise but might be out of your budget.
Buses straight into the centre if you don’t need the car to commute.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Rothwell is nice, as is Morley a little further south - both have excellent town centres so a good choice of shops, bars and restaurants (when Covid allows). Good transport links as well with the M1 and M62 both within easy reach. I'd also recommend New Forest Village estate, it benefits from cheaper house prices as it's LS10, but it's basically its own community and it's a great place to live, everyone is really neighbourly. There isn't as much to do locally, but it's a quick bus/taxi into Leeds centre from there. All these areas will be cheaper than north Leeds. Horsforth, Chapel Allerton, etc are really lovely but ridiculously expensive.

Hi know the area very well grew up in The north now live in the south, also work in the community. Good areas to look at in my opinion:
Yeadon, Rawdon, Guiseley, Horsforth, Cookridge, Moortown, Roundhay (just be careful if looking here you don’t end up in chapel town/Harehills), Roth well, Oulton, Garforth, Colton, Morley, ChapelAllerton. Grew up near the airport, no issues there you get used to it.
