Just before Christmas someone was really outraged on our Facebook residents' group asking if anyone knew who x was as she had their post delivered to her address, it had never happened before.  Someone pointed out that she had recently sold her house and maybe it was the new people, and she was outraged, thought it was awful that it could be them - completely OTT reaction.  So probably best to ask!
I'm sure there was a thread on here from someone who was equally outraged that their buyers had arranged for post to be sent already and I seem to remember they'd returned to sender.

It was more likely the buyers knew eff all about it! I've nearly always had post waiting for me. Sure it's not even from utilities etc, more likely insurance or from my lender.

When our buyer had a load of things delivered to our home before completion, it did annoy me, mainly because he hadn't asked if that was okay (bearing in mind that it was still OUR home at that point) but also because the buyer was an arrogant idiot who thought that the world revolved around him. He'd upset me several times during the conveyancing, to a point whereby I had to tell him that I would only communicate with him via my solicitor. It was so tempting to refuse delivery/send it all back but I managed to restrain myself from doing so...

Nearly eight years after buying this place, we still get the odd bit of post for the vendors - mostly for the parents who died nearly 15 years ago...

Doesn't surprise me Adrian. Even after the best part of 20 years we were still occasionally recieving post for the people we bought from. I bet the people who bought from us are still recieving post for them.

I would ask your seller, but wouldn't have thought it would be a problem, UNLESS you are thinking of installing your broadband meaning they will no longer have their broadband.  My buyer arranged for his broadband to be installed on a date that had been proposed for completion, but the date was never formally agreed and an issue on the title meant that the date was missed by several months.  I very nearly had my broadband contract disconnected.

It wasn't a problem for me when our recent buyers did this - was only a few odd letters after all. Seems petty and more effort to send them back!

Ask through the Estate Agent. A polite request is best. Though if the item is undelivered as the vendor is out. Who is going to retrieve it from the depot ?

Our buyer used our address to apply for her daughter's new school place.  Didn't ask, and this was well before exchange!

Cheeky - but I just sent them a text and dropped it off with the estate agent for them to collect.

They did end up buying the place, but only after their own buyers pulled out at the last minute and they had to find new ones.

I had a few letters from my new buyer in my old house before I'd moved out. I just put them to one side, then left them on the kitchen worktop when I finally left for them to easily find.

We have just agreed a decent price, entry in two weeks. A key reason for the competition to buy our house was the school catchment area.  Applications for school places need to be in by the end of next week, so the buyer is cutting it fine. I'd have no problem with them using the address, especially given we used that as a selling point.
