Tried the pedal test and no codes came up, other than a code 16 which I am aware of - which is a brake bulb I'm fixing tomorrow - caused by trying to replace the rear right sidelight bulb, ahem.

If there were any other error codes, would they not show until the code 16 one has gone after fitting the bulb? Sorry for all the questions

All stored codes should come up, so the car doesn't think anything is wrong.
If it did it every time, I'd suggest a blocked exhaust or DPF (blocked catalyst common if it was petrol) or the fuel filter, but I agree with the others that it is most likely the egr valve and pipework needs cleaning.

Take it to a garage that knows what they are doing and tell them the symptoms, if they suggest it is likely the egr needs cleaning, let them do it, if there is a sucking of teeth and a rolling of eyes with "could be expensive, we'll need to take a good look at it" go somewhere else.

Don't go to the dealer, they will just throw new parts at it, and charge you top prices for labour and parts, a smaller garage or vauxhall specialist will have a go at cleaning it first.
How the heck do you find a Vauxhall specialist? At least it's agreed I'm not going to a main Vauxhall dealer.

I know you can't diagnose a car from looking under the bonnet, but took these after trying the pedal test. Comments?

It is really easy to clean that egr valve & pipe, shouldn't cost much at a garage.

Although they went on to blame the turbo wastegate actuator having a punctured diaphragm, again an easy & cheap fix for a garage who know what they are doing.

I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

"A service" is a very flexible term.
It can just mean oil and filter, it can mean following the manufacturer's recommendations.

Clearly the garage that are doing your car are nearer the lax end of that spectrum - a fuel filter is most certainly a routine consumable that should be replaced periodically.
Is that why Vauxhall's MAJOR service includes that for £335 minimum!
Also just spotted this on there list of extra's:
Oil and Filter INC VHC - Vauxhall Approved parts add £99
Replacement Auto Gearbox Fluid - Vauxhall Approved Parts add £120
This is beyond a joke now, I just cannot afford that, the car must only be worth £3,500 :(

The value of the car is largely irrelevant.  If you need a new set of, say, tyres you need a new set of tyres - the value of the car is irrelevant.  Same with brakes, oil, filters and other 'wearing' parts etc.

ALL cars incur basic servicing costs, regardless of their age and regardless of their value.  It's part of the cost of motoring.

Another way to look at this is that your car IS NOT worth £3500 at the moment because it doesn't work properly.  Spending a few £100 will get it back to working properly so must surely be well worth the money?  What's your alternative - buy a new car?

Okay, so finally got all my car documents together, Road tax, Insurance, owners manual, servicing /receipts etc and this is the service history from new (first registered 15th Feb 2011).

    • 20.01.2012  Mileage 13,181 - Vauxhall dealer stamped.
    • 23.09.2013  Battery (key), Pollen filter, Fuel filter, and Brake fluid are all ticked = exchanged or replaced. Mileage 23,378 - Vauxhall dealer stamped.
    • 02.07.2014  Mileage 27,196 - my local garage / dealer stamped, no work details.
    • 13.07.2015  Mileage 30,779 - my local garage / dealer stamped, no work details.
    • 07.01.2016  Air cleaner element, and Fuel filter ticked. Mileage 32,303

***April 2017 = I buy car from my local garage who have serviced it ever since.***

    • 19.04.2017  Mileage 35,337 - my local garage / dealer stamped, no work details.
    • 11.04.2018  Oil, Oil filter, Air filter, Pollen filter, brake pads (and MOT). Mileage 42,304 - same local garage, invoice given as I couldn't find my service booklet.
    • 09.04.2019  Oil, Oil filter, Air filter, cabin filter (and MOT). Mileage 49,325 - same local garage, invoice given as I couldn't find my service booklet.
    • 20.03.2020 Oil, oil filter, Air filter, Cabin filter, 2x tyres (and MOT). Mileage 57,167 - same local garage, invoice given as I couldn't find my service booklet.

There you have it. So, it has had two fuel filters changed / replaced but none since 2016 according to that since my local garage has owned it (are they not capable of doing it?!) So, from what you've said, long overdue a new one. And I'll take my service book to get stamped next time.

  • That was meant to read not had a fuel filter replaced since 2016 (which my local garage did) and it's not had a new once since I owned it in 2017 (blame forum editing).

Why not get this changed first ,cheap job and if it cures it ,great if not ,well not a lot spent and should be changed anyway .

Problem is a lot of garages will do the standard services but not mention items due by time. Like the cam belt replacement which was 9 years overdue by time on the very low mileage Matiz that my daughter was given.
