Does your car have a carbon ring release bearing or something?  That would certainly wear by keeping the clutch depressed for an extended period, but the only car I know that uses that type of bearing was the Hillman Imp, and I neo use a retro-fit ball bearing replacement that someone has manufactured in mine.

A needle roller or ball bearing should last longer than the friction plate, especially these days with asbestos being banned from friction material, so you just renew the bearing each time you renew the plate.

No idea, and hope to never find out.

I am probably concerning myself too much about this, but I'm from the days where, in my yoof, a clutch would do well to last 40k, and that went for the suspension parts too. Undoubtedly cars these days are streets ahead in reliability and longevity. Quite possibly I could sit - depressed - at every junction for a minute. But I just won't. That would be too depressing.

    😁

Each time one stops, be it at a junction or in slow traffic moving traffic et al, the question of releasing the clutch has to be judged on its own merits. The traffic situation that has caused you to stop will generally dictate whether you keep the clutch depressed or you release it,...and for how long your left leg can keep it depressed before it becomes uncomfortable. Everyone has their own preference.

However, I haven’t driven a car with a clutch and one of those ‘stir your porridge’  gearstick thingy’s for decades though, so don’t listen to me, I'm out of touch. I’m one of those ‘automatic’ drivers who sit at traffic lights for minutes at a time with my foot continuously on the brake;...I do that to annoy and dazzle the car behind me with my brake lights.

Hang on - how does S/S work on an automatic?! What makes the engine fire up again?

Too much technology. Citroen should work on getting electric windows to last more than 4 years before they need fixing. And then maybe move onto other stuff. I dread to think the repair bills that used car buyers are going to have over the next 10 years.
If it makes it to year 10 it will be 'stop-stop' technology

Pressing the accelerator ... same as in a manual car. (I guess you've not tried that either). ;)

S/S is the work of the devil, imo. I always disable it.

However, If you keep the gear selector in ‘D’ the engine restarts the moment it senses the brake pedal being released.

On mine it's when you release the brake.

I stopped holding autos on the footbrake when they all had high level rear blinding lights fitted.  It made me cringe with embarrassment to look in the mirror and see the driver behind illuminated bright red with their eyes screwed tight shut.

You'd think someone would have the wit to require them to time out after a couple of seconds when the car is stationary, they serve no function then apart from annoying the driver behind.

I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

My Skoda has a button to switch start stop off. You need to switch it on again if you want it.
..yes but you have to remember to turn it off every time you start a new trip.

I'm with the OP, stop/start is largely a con to allow manufacturers to meet some arbitrary emissions target, and for me is also a pain in the proverbial, (I always turn it off if I remember).
Same as electronic handbrake, a solution to a problem that doesn't exist. Just something else to go wrong as the car gets older.

No, it stays off  until you switch it on again.

That is what main beam headlights are for especially in a higher SUV B)
