The free Data reward SIM has Min £2 top up to get started so pretty cheap to try.
The 200MB per month free can keep you going for quite a lot of low data uses like messaging if you avoid media download over data.
Also does call and text like a normal SIM.

If I were you I would hold off until more is known about the need/requirement for a ‘vaccination App/Passport.
There are likely to be many thousands (of many nationalities) who don’t have smartphones.  I can’t believe they will simply be ignored as regards holidays.  Some ‘manual’ means will surely be developed.
Also, if the track & trace app is anything to go by, it needed a fairly recent version of IOS to operate.  Until you know what any new app will require how do you know your wife’s ‘old’ iphone will work ?

I may be wrong, but as far as I can see, the 1pmobile sim is true PAYG - top up and use the credit as and when - £10 could last ages with occasional use. With any PAYG sim, you'll need to keep some credit initially to activate the sim and to make the minimum calls to keep it active

    £10 Min every 4months, £30 per year.

  • Well, very many thanks to everyone for the tips ... I'll cancel the EE deal. When (if) the vaccination travel app comes along, I'll take it from there on the basis of the advice received.

OK all noted about the possible app. However, when (if) it comes I will need it.

    Thanks.
I've looked at this and it's data only, which is fine if push comes to shove.
But what I'd really like is a true PAYG card for the iPhone - one that offers phone calls/texts but also data. And all this on a strictly PAYG basis. If I don't need to top up then I will not. I hate the idea of having to top up every month whether or not I have used all the credit.

The Three Data Reward SIM is a payg SIM. You can make calls and send txts or use more than 200MB data/month if you buy payg topup.

The only difference is you don't *have* to top it up if you only want to use a little data or receive calls and txts. It's the only SIM I've found where the minimum cost is £0/month.
Yes, @IRememberItWell I've also got one used a fair bit of data last year when we were away (UK) and I've also made calls and sent texts with no problem. It's just the new prices that are a bit of a problem BUT if you know you are going to use a lot of data in say 30 days you can top-up and buy a Data Pack where you also get unlimited texts and minutes (to standard numbers)! Otherwise, as already suggested 1pmobile may suit (uses EE's network) but you do have to top-up every 120 days (or for a whole year IIRC?).
BUT beofre you decide,  which network(s) do you get good signals from in the places you go?
If you get a good O2 signal, you could consider the O2 Classic 3-2-1 SIM but you have to buy it from a dealer as O2 are no longer supplying it to new customers and you can't buy "big bundles" as that's a change of tariff and you can't then go back to 3-2-1. See https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/77967267/#Comment_77967267 and subsequent posts, take no notice of the scaremongers. The 20p deal might not be available now but search as there's more than one seller BUT make sure it's the Classic 3-2-1 SIM that you buy (you may get a bonus thrown in) as some of the adds aren't crystal clear. If you find a current 20p one, what's to lose? Minimum top-up with O2 is £10 best done with a voucher from major stores. You might want to read the whole of that thread, it's quite interesting.
    HTH.

As per the first person to respond, go 1pmobile PAYG
    1p per text
    1p per min of call
    1p per MB of data
Minimum commitment is to top up at least £10 every 4 months so that's just £30 per year !!
I don't believe that there is any cheaper option.
Plus your top ups never go out of date.  The money stays there indefinitely and you can even use that credit to top up with.
