Storage Heaters

I was just wondering if anyone knew about storage heaters. Im trying to sort out an old house and it currently has two old storage heaters in it. If I was to purchase new ones would they remove old ones? Does anyone know what good makes are, I understand they are not used as much these days.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not much point in changing old storage heaters.  They're all 100% efficient insofar as all the energy used will be turned into heat, but modern high heat retention ones with fans can be a bit cheaper to run because they don't leak heat throughout the night and in the daytime if you're not there, IF they're programmed appropriately.
Dimplex Quantum seem to be good but expensive, so you'd have to think just how long the payback period would be.  Make sure you're on Economy 7, that the immersion heaters only work on the night rate and that you don't use electric showers.
Presumably it's totally impossible to get gas and unrealistic to use oil or LPG?

    Gentle hint as above.

This is the LPG Heating / Oil /etc Forum.

Perhaps more answers if you clicked on the Big Black Energy  button? :)

'Sorting out an old house'? Thinkmore broadly about your heating options.
Two storage heaters seems very few for a house, suggesting there is another heating source elsewhere in the house. Is it really worth having E7 just for 2 heaters if there's other heating/electricity demands in the property?

We are looking at Oil or gas but the house is in the middle of nowhere, with only old storage heaters in it and an old fire place for heat. Oil seems the cheapeest option asking neighbours etc, we also thought having a couple of storage heaters would help as well but maybe better to get the full oil setup then rather then both, we tnought but newer storage heaters in for now till we get the full heating done but from what you say it seems better to just get full setup done?

Yeah as above no other heating source other than a fire.lol We have a couple of electric oil heaters for now but will start to drain the finances.

From what you guys are saying better to get the house re done completely on oil and gas maybe? I only asked re the stoarege heaters as we have on in one room and it still works pretty well keeping the dinning room warm.

If it ain't broke don't fix it (and if it is broke it usually can be repaired cheaply). Replacing even the most inefficient old storage heater is going to take a long time to pay for itself especially if you are going to replace the system later anyway.

Combination of oil and storgae heaters makes nosense at all.
All the install cost of new oil system, then expensive daytime electricity for the storage heaters at night.
Either add more storage heaters as your long term solution and stick with E7 (plus night-time immersion for hot water, timer for night-time washing machine etc), or get rid and install proper oil system.
    One or the other!

Presumably it's totally impossible to get mains gas?  If it can be laid on for less than a four figure sum then it's a no-brainer, unless it's a really cheap property.

Sorry, that made me chuckle - have you never heard of country properties? ;)
A girl I know just spent 300+k on a 3 bed 'in need of serious modernisation' house ... about 3 miles from a gas supply!

Yes, it may well be miles from a gas main (the OP says it's in the middle of nowhere), but it's still worth seeking confirmation.
The OP may be unaware of the vast difference between kWh prices of electricity and gas and how much more attractive a property becomes when it has gas.
The basic details should always be established firmly, not just assumed.
