Credit slip and missing cheques - post office

So, i usually pay cheques into my bank via the post office (so using an envelope provided to me by the bank)
I thought I paid a cheque in with the paying in slip, and put both into the envelope and gave to the post office, who stamped it, gave me a receipt and that was that.

The amount has not going in the bank 4days later (usually does by now) immediately suspicious, it being a large amount of money, I contacted the person who wrote the cheque  and it hasn’t been cashed , so they managed to cancel the cheque and she is going to write me a new one (luckily).

However I am still
concerned about this missing cheque - if I call my bank, and quote the paying in slip information, will they be able to trace it?

I mean, if the bank received the paying in slip but not the cheque for some reason (I read this somewhere online- and i definitely sent the cheque) does the bank keep a copy of paying in slips coming from a post office if there was no cheque to go with it? Or do they dispose of them if no cheque was with it?

I don't know the detail of the process or its normal turnaround time, but, especially in these far from normal times, it wouldn't surprise me that it's not completed within four days so it may have been a bit premature to go round stopping the cheque and getting it reissued, and I can't believe it would be a productive use of anyone's time to chase further to try to ascertain exactly what has happened so far.

If the cheque writer was able to establish that the cheque hadn't been cashed, does this suggest that they have access to online, phone or branch banking (and therefore more efficient ways of transferring money to you)?

I hope you are not counting the weekend in these 4 days..

Rather than them writing a cheque. Why not get them to send the funds as a faster payment. Far quicker.

the last cheque  I paid into my bank via the PO service took around 2 weeks, it's actually now quicker for me to post the cheque to my bank (though it does me the price of the stamp)

In the current circumstances I would have thought an account to account transfer with faster payments would have been safer and quicker.
If you have been using the same post office and the same people at the PO for some time, it could be that Covid is slowing things down.
If the original cheque was crossed, filled out correctly, with your account number clearly shown on the back, I would think slowness of the cheque clearing system is more likely than it being high jacked.

My Dad passed away recently and almost all the refunds from various places have been by cheque, I'd almost forgotten how to deal with them!

Because they can? Some people do find it easier. Not just older folk, either.

Cheques are usually the default when they don't have or want to use electronic payment methods.
I personally use the cheque deposit option in my banking app up to 1k (which covers most credits)

My SIL, who is younger than me, still writes cheques. She also transfers money between her accounts at different banks by going in to the branch and withdrawing cash over the counter then goes along to the other branch paying it in over the counter - the 2 banks are in different towns, a 40 mile round trip from home !  If she needs to know how much is in her account she goes into branch for a mini statement.  She was shocked when she gave me some money by cheque and I paid it in to my bank straight away using my phone. There are still some strange folk out there - she doesn't want to use a computer for banking because it is not safe.

    Bet she's never been scammed.
