....and can I squirt WD-40 around under the tap head for future preventative measures?
  • Best to use silicone lubricant spray. Worth having a tin of that anyway - it's great for lots of stuff, like your car door rubber seals, window guides, etc.

Anyhoo, the stopcock should be fully open - and then closed off a half-turn or so just to help prevent it seizing in place. If it's sticky to turn, then spraying sili lube down the spindle sides whilst opening and closing it fully a few times might help.

Never have it fully open as it may seize, just open it up enough for the required pressure.
Err, how do I know what the required pressure is? Time for a new forum thread?! Shower pressure is awful, and it drips underneath when running it. Electrics and water scare the life outta me, I'm not touching that :(

Pressure and flow are different things, tho' associated.

You measure pressure by standing close to your cold kitchen tap, trying to stop the flow with your thumb, and then checking just how wet your pants got in the process. Or buy a gauge.

You measure flow by standing close to your kitchen tap, and then doing something sensible; place a pan under it, turn the cold on fully for 6 seconds ('onethousandandone, onethousandandtwo...'), measure the number of litres, and times that by 10 to get 'litres per minute'.

Let us know about the flow.

Thanks for that. I'm not bothered about the poor shower performance and dripping from underneath it any longer, so thanks to everyone who helped me repressurise my combi boiler, thread officially CLOSED :)
  • Just as it was getting exciting...
