House or Bungalow? How many rooms? Garage that has/needs power?
Are there enough sockets etc already or would you want more?

semi detached 3 bed with extended kitchen - the kitchen currently has 5 double sockets and three singles (I have no idea why it has so many!)

Garage has lighting but we would want to add plug sockets into it

Looking at the pic something is not right, the plastic holders for the MCBs are not in right, upside down? Not sure as it is a long time since I worked on one of these.
Plus there should be the cover that went over the fuses with the centre knocked out.  So all in all it looks like an amateur bodge at some time.  Best to get a local sparky to check and quote for a new consumer unit with decent protection for you and your family.

well theres NO RCD, so it's not as safe as it could be.
if you want to do any electrical wok at all, the modified circuits need to have RCD protection, and the only way to do that is by upgrading the consumer unit. £4-500 all in depending on where you are

On the other hand, I suspect he was working until after 9p.m. today.

It would cost more than that here, assuming RCBOs (Type A obviously - we haven't used Type AC for years) for all circuits and a Type 2 SPD.
