  • Thanks for comments, looks like a straight swap with an updated boiler, as no benefits to be called upon. Will get some quotes in. Jon

There is not much time to get on the scheme, but if you can it might well be worth looking at installing a heat-pump with two thirds or more funded by the Green Home Grants scheme. The install cost would be higher, but the grant would actually make it cheaper overall.
Even those who already have heat pumps installed would mostly have had a gas boiler if it was available..
I highly doubt that by the time you've included the cost of modifying the rest of the heating system for the lower water temperature that it would ever be cheaper than a boiler replacement....

You do not need a gas boiler if you have a heat pump and two thirds of the cost is covered by the grant (total cost is around £10-12k), if you are in receipt of certain benefits, anything disability based or certain elements of UC where you can still have a reasonable income then the grant will pay 100% of the cost, many people fall into that category due to Covid at the moment.
A heat pump will still cost you 2-3 times per kwh compared with the cost of gas and you need the heating system upgraded by installing larger radiators, a new hot water tank and possibly a fair amount of plumbing and not all places or people's lifestyles are suitable

I've got a heat pump and have had it for ten years. I had it installed with underfloor heating and we are at home all day, all factors which should be taken into account rather than just looking at a headline figure of a grant. If you get a grant then AFAIK you get any grant money deducted from the RHI payments so you can't benefit from both.

I know how to use mine (which is where most people have problems) and I'm more than happy with it ,but there's no way I suggest that anyone replaces a gas boiler with one.

TBH if they installed a gas main where I live, I'd be the first to ditch it and go for gas.

I had a Vaillant combi boiler that lasted me around 20 years. I had it serviced  in October and the engineer, a local guy I trust very much, told me it was safe and working fine, but at some point in the future it would need a few bits and pieces replaced at a cost of a few hundred pounds. He said it could go on for another couple of years, but if I wanted to replace it I should get some quotes and decide what to do. Given my Vaillant had served me so well, and he strongly recommended Vaillant, I got him to quote me and he fitted it at the end of November. Coupled with a Tado smart thermostat it really is a dream. Tado modulates the boiler as no other smart thermostat (apart from Vaillant's own) will do. For me, it's Vaillant all the way. As others have suggested, get finance elsewhere and use a local, trusted company. It's great to have that local support and any warranty is with Vaillant themselves, so if the local guy goes bust you still have the warranty. I got 7 years with my boiler, but could have paid extra for 10.

Obviously, because replacing a gas boiler with another gas boiler is not a 'green' solution, although it may be slightly more efficient to run. But it's still burning fossil fuel.
