What to buy at Waitrose?

I've got £40 to spend at Waitrose thanks to Pigsback action-smiley-033.gif

I don't usually shop there as we can't afford to, but I now have these John Lewis vouchers in my paw :)

Rather than spend all my vouchers on 'everyday' food, I would like to buy a couple of items that I would never usually be able to afford - be they conserves, wine, sweets.....just something as a special treat for the family over Christmas.

Is there anything that anyone recommends as being just too fantastic to leave in the shop? (bearing in mind that I won't be able to go back until next Christmas with my next load of Pigsback vouchers!!)

No meat items though, please :)

Thanks

I think Waitrose and John Lewis will give you change from your vouchers.

Yes they do. I bought a £18 turkey last year and was given change from a £50 gift voucher. Didn't expect that!

If you're looking for special things for Christmas, they do a great range of wines and champagnes and their cheeses are very good.

    D.
  • get some pheasant, a couple of wood pigeons, and some of their own brand ice cream
It's not easy having a good time. Even smiling makes my face ache.
  • Not a treat - but their tuna in springwater is the best!

    Edited to say:
Just noticed in one of the Saturday Supplements that 'Waitrose Richly Fruited Christmas Pudding with Remy Martin', priced at £12.99 for 1.3kg, gets 10/10 saying "A classic pudding with a traditional rich, dark taste. Full of nuts, giving a lovely soft crunch to each mouthful. Tastes very boozy. The one preferred by Gordon Ramsay's wife. Boring presentation in a black plastic pot, but transer it to a smart plate and decorate with holly and pretend you made it yourself".
  • Flavoured olives
Flavoured oils -garlic, lemon, wok oil, truffle oil etc
Tiptree jams -'little scarlet' is supposed to be the best strawberry jam -haven't tried it 'cos I make my own ;)
    Bonne Maman fruit compotes
    maple syrup
anything from Merchant Gourmet -micuit tomatoes (half dried tomatoes), dulce de leche (thick butterscotch for easy banoffee pie)
Their own brand dark chocolate is good value -you can buy 2 200g bars for £2.89
    Green and Blacks chocolate
Pomona -this is a gorgeous drink made in Somerset. It is a blend of Somerset apple brandy and apple juice -a lovely aperitif.

Most of these things can be bought at other supermarkets, but if you want to indulge for free they're my recommendations ;)

I love Waitrose, and if you stick rigidly to a list of basic ingredients it isn't that much more than other supermarkets. It's all the lovely tempting extras that push your bill up.

I like the fact that they make an effort to stock local, seasonal produce. The staff are brilliant -well-informed, knowledgeable about their products and really helpful. Worth paying a little extra for IMO.

Just thought of another -I haven't tried it yet but I'm planning to get some for Christmas -French fruit syrups for adding to lemonade to make diabolos a popular drink with French kids. My French teacher recommended them, the brand is Teissère, they come in various flavours.

And another -Rock's organic fruit cordials -gorgeous labels and jolly nice too, they do a Christmassy one.

I love Waitrose, even though I can't really afford to shop there. They do have a great selection of cheeses, and IMO the best wine selection of any supermarket. Why not take a look at https://www.ocado.com and see what takes your fancy?
