Noisey neighbour hell...

  • As I said, if you want to move the council might bite your hand off to buy the house off you (for market value).
  • I think definitely your first port of call would be to ask the local authority if they would buy the house back as previously mentioned.
I have every sympathy as have had awful problems with my neighbours for the 3 years I have lived here - dog barking, blocking my car in because I parked in ‘their’ space (it’s a residential car park with no allocated spaces) abusing any workmen etc that do jobs on my house (apparently too noisy) abusing me and my child because I had a bbq, abuse for watering my garden as apparently water was going into their garden! The list goes on!! A few neighbours actually warned me about them when I moved in! Thankfully I’m only renting and have just bought a house, will be glad to get out of here!
if it’s affecting your health and sanity it’s best to cut your losses and get out! Good luck 😉
  • Wow thanks so much for all your input. Breaks my heart to have to move after putting so much in. I really don't understand how the council let groups of unemployed young men live together without any scrutiny. As awful as it sounds them sort of people should be checked up on and if they are causing harm they get a 1 bed flat till they improve. The house they live in is a complete mess if it was privately owned you'd sling them out for ruining a nice house.
  • We sold a council flat last year back to the Council for a decent price. Couldn't have asked for a better buyer. Apparently councils are keen to buy back housing.

Really, really feel for you.  I had neighbours from hell living the other side of the wall for too long.  I look back at how many years of my life were effectively "lost" because of these cretins.  Police/Council will buck pass one to the other resulting in little, if anything, being done to help you.  Sell as fast as you can, by whatever method you can.
Totally agree with @Tippytoes I have had this experience twice, living next to noisy, inconsiderate tenants who don't care. On both occasions, it was me, the homeowner who had to move. ASB/noise nuisance affects your mental health and wellbeing. You can't relax in your own home and when they're not making noise, you are in anticipation, waiting for them to make noise. Nightmare!

I declared the dispute on the property questionnaire but the Buyer was adamant that he wouldn't experience the same problem and it didn't affect the sale price. In other words, there is always someone bigger and tougher, who will stand up to selfish scum. Yes, you will have to declare the dispute but you still might find a Buyer, who is willing to deal with things in their own way. Life is nothing if you're miserable. Sell up and leave. Find somewhere with better, decent neighbours. All the best.

You’re lucky you found a buyer who was not put off. I’m selling my house after 1 year but I put up with it without getting the council involved. My neighbour is single mum with 4 kids from 25 to 10. Pot smoking, late night parties, hot tub in the summer. It’s a small house with small garden and the balls constantly coming in my garden. I hate inconsiderate people and can’t wait to sell.
  • They now make noise-blocking earbuds specifically for sleeping, worth a look on youtube: e.g., quieton, Soundcore SLEEP A10 Earbuds, and Bose sleepbuds.
  • I’ve been where you are, it’s horrific and the effects snowball as you never catch up on the lost sleep. In my case the council was better than yours had been but I still ended up selling and moving. All it would have taken is for the offending neighbours to move and some other noisy gif to move in and I’d have been back to square one. I did take a bit of a hit on the price but it was worth it.

Hi OP - do bear in mind that legally there is a a specific definition of what comprises “a dispute” if you are wanting to sell then I’d have a chat with your chosen solicitor about what you have to declare, and what you don’t. My suspicion is that if you have raised an official formal complaint with the council this may well count, but certainly worth double checking.
