Warranty issue with bike

Bought a bike in June last year.
Noticed an issue with changing gears so I got it booked in my local bike place a couple days ago. They looked it over and instantly said that something inside of the front gear shifter is broken, telling me that I should get in touch with the place I bought it from and it'll be covered under warranty.

Got in contact with them and they have said its covered under warranty but they can't repair the issue due to the closest workshop being closed at the min. So they give me two options:
1. Take it back to my local bike shop, let them fix it, I pay for it and then they will reimburse me the cost onto a gift card to use at their store - I don't want a gift card. I'll never use it as I don't shop there. So I'm losing money.
2. They will send me the broken part and I can fix it myself being guided by one their bike specialists on a video call - I'm hopeless at manual stuff, don't have the equipment and I don't feel comfortable doing it at all.

All I want is my bike issue sorted under their warranty policy and fixed by a professional. That doesn't end up costing me money and/or a lot of my time trying to fix it myself. Are these options fair and am I just being an unreasonable plank?

Or, Is there anything I can do to get fixed it by the company as per their warranty policy or any rights I have?

Have you explained that you don't want a voucher and you want them to pay for the fix?

If they won't do that you can ask where the nearest shop to you is, but it might cost an arm and a leg to get your bike there (it also might be very busy for a long time as they have had to close some? (at least one) shops).

  • Their offer, based on current circumstances seems reasonable. It is likely that the changing of the part yourself will not take long and parts are usually easy to change, if you really are all thumbs then as a friend who can assemble IKEA furniture to do it for you and that is probably exaggerating the difficulty level. Alternatively take the voucher offer, if you cycle semi-regularly there will be something you need over the coming year, new tyres, inner tubes, a new helmet etc.

  • I think you're being a bit stubborn, the result being you're making things more difficult for yourself unnecessarily.  Do you want the bike fixed promptly or do you want a protracted solution in accordance with your rights? If it's the latter, wait until their workshop opens and get them to fix it then.

What bike is it, mountain, road, etc? Fitting a new shifter, if that's what they'll send you, should be fairly trivial which you should be able to do yourself let alone take it to the bike shop to fix.

I disagree. The retailer offering to pay for the repair would be reasonable. Doing so in gift vouchers is not at all reasonable.

Yes I did and their reply was 'Unfortunately we cannot offer a small percentage as a refund'.

I completely understand their point view with the current situation. But it just feels like the onus is on me rather than them to resolve this when it wasn't my fault. Whether that be at a financial loss (gift card) or spending hours trying to fix the issue myself and hoping I don't get infuriated with it then end up breaking something else in the process.
Regarding the gift card I've already got that stuff and I dislike the fact that I would be forced into buying from there just to use the gift card.

Maybe you're right. Which is one of the reasons why I asked if I was being unreasonable. I'm going to explain the issues I have with the options to another one of their customer service members and go from there - see if theres any middle ground we can reach. If it's the same situation then it looks like I'm getting my hands dirty. Thanks for your input.

This is a good opportunity to brush up on your bicycle maintenance skills. :)
  • Their offer seems fair.
You've had it since June, possibly damaged it yourself, possibly not. Could of used it every day and covered thousands of miles. (I know, you'll say you haven't)
Either way, I'm surprised you're being hard work

You have seen right through me.

Throughout the winter, the bike hasn't been in the garage. Instead me and Pegasus have been on a life changing journey (I know, I'll say I did do all this but you'll say I haven't) - we breezed through the 21 stages of the Tour De France, we realised Everest is merely a mole hill and then even cycled to Mars to get front row seats for the Rover landing.

    So obnoxious.

    I agree with this ^^^^^

I can't believe that between them the original retailer and the repair shop chosen by the OP can't arrange to get the necessary repair done, and the original retailer directly reimburse the repair shop without involving any payment by the OP.  It's no different from the original retailer doing the repair under warranty, but making the OP pay for it and then reimbursing them with a credit note.  It's daft and unreasonable.
