New home cheapest energy with British Gas

Hi everyone. Sorry if I'm sounding daft on this one. I move into a new build shared ownership next week and the utilities are with British gas. I'm happy about that as I would choose to go with them anyway. My question is.. with me starting afresh with them, how do I get onto the cheapest tariff? Do I just ask for this over the phone, or will they try to put me on a more expensive tariff. Money is so tight at the mo, as it is with everyone. Could I look up tariffs online before making the call? Thanks in advance for any replies ☺

Try posting in Energy - this is for LPG, Oil and other fuels.1

@TweetyUK You've posted in the wrong bit of the Forum - should be under Energy rather the sub-section of LPG. You're not the first, won't be the last.
You have to contact them anyway when you get access to give them meter reads (take a photo) and your details and will go on a standard tariff (ie expensive) by default.
Simply ask them at the same time.
Why are you happy to go with BG - there are many others out there who are cheaper.
Yes you can look up choices beforehand - use a comparison site like Switch With Which - and assume electric 2900 KWh per annum and gas 12,000 kWh.
Get into the habit of reading meters monthly, check your bills, keep your own records.
Don't forget to contact the supplier of where you are moving from.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill1 -
Robin9 said:Simply ask them at the same time.Nope.The best BG deals are only on comparison sites. The BG call centre will only have access to mega-expensive deals. And of course, the cheapest BG-family deals are with BG Evolve, not the main BG. Again, the BG call centre won't have access.Needless to say, the cheapest deals won't have BG in the name and are likely to be from separate suppliers. But if the OP wants to pay well over the odds just to get a familiar name, they're free to waste their money as they choose.2

Oh gosh, sorry to post in the wrong place 😳 thank you for the reply though I do appreciate that and think what you said covers what I need to know. 👍0

Make sure you register with BG, take photos and send meter readings as soon as you take possession. Don't rely on anyone doing it for you. Then start comparing with CA and 'Which? Switch'.1
