Just looking at second hand cars and checking MOT histories. Just found 2 that have had very frequent MOTs. About 10 in their first 3 years. First one with less than 200 miles on the clock. Then every few months. Does anyone know the explanation?

    Taxi, PHV?
  • Maybe the owner was bored and couldn't visit anywhere else due to lockdowns.

For once, Fred's caution about going to the garage too often may be well founded.

If it's an "ordinary" car rather than a taxi or some-such, then it doesn't need an MOT in the first 3 years.  For an older used car, a lot of changes of owners might possibly explain it - a dealer will often put a fresh MOT on it when they sell it to someone else.
  • You were advocating bicycles yesterday Fred, what gives?

If you google the registration number, you may well find the minicab licence application records.  I did for one recently.

Some taxi licensings require a MOT even if car is new, but usually not 6 months till a certain age (about 6 years old0
if its had frequent but not regular MOTs it may have been a "plated hire accident cover car" requiring a plate in different areas whilst an owners car is fixed
these cost the 3rd party insurers upto £190/day
Now we all know how it felt to play in the band on the Titanic...
