We have an open fire we burn coal and logs on. Recently the rendering in the surround has started cracking and crumbling. We’ve had someone out twice to re-render it but the same keeps happening. Any advice on a stronger materiel to use and if the fire is safe to use as it currently is?

One usually has a fireback made of cast iron, concrete, or ceramic. If you have bare brick at the back (which it looks like you do), then you'll need to use a heat resistant material. Vitcas do a range of products that may well be suitable - Either the fireboard or heat resistant plaster..Ultimately, fitting a stove will save you quite a bit on fuel and give much better heating than an open fire. Her courage will change the world.
Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.1 -
Even if you use fire proof materials, it is inevitable that the mortar will decay and the bricks spall. It does it with burners too.
