I used to go to Switzerland a lot with work but it has never been on my holiday list. Yes, the scenery is spectacular and the public transport easily the best in the world (you can literally set your watch by it) but eating and drinking out are very expensive. Personally, I don't want to spend a holiday counting the pennies and living on supermarket picnics. As an alternative, Slovenia can offer just about everything that Switzerland has (apart from ontime trains) but at a much lower price.

Malta is a good shout. Driving can be crazy and parking impossible to find but there is an excellent bus service around the island for exploring and it's such a small place that it's impossible to get lost. May not be the cheapest of the Mediterranean islands but the quality of the food is very high with a mix of British, Italian and north African influences
