Isn't it just! I have a solid 15 years of full time work paying income tax, start a new job on November 19th and boom, company closed for lockdown and no support available other than measly Universal Credit which doesn't even cover my bills. What are we supposed to do?!

Gosh, did you get any indication from pre interview research that the company were clearly in trouble if they were having to do lay offs, furlough and the like? Could you not try for another job with your strong work history. What if the job turns out a mis-fit?
Personally I started a job in January, was meant to be a Collections Agent but grimly ended up as Sales Agent. As my biggest downfall I was just to confident in an interview to receive a reject for the Collections role) It was hell as I genuinely wouldn't have freely wanted to do sales all day, every day for 42 hours plus of a week, never mind cover for someone off sick so didn't I wish lay-off and lockdown closure was the milkey bar kid, truly. I knew it was pretty bad when a couple of the customers wished me good luck as I was wrapping up calls. I was responsible for getting into and out of the position, totally kick myself for not demanding paperwork when all I got in the lead up to job starting was a Covid assessment.
Anyway after working to get 5 weeks pay, in a week, I got out there to other job interviews who confirm this is some sort of boom time as people refuse to go to physical interviews for non work from home vacancies. 1st offer was a 6 month FTC but has ended up paying more per hour then the sales job even and 2nd offer of a permanent role with a company that has goals going through to 2022, whilst there was acceptance of same salary as that of my 2020 ex employer to get in and really fortunate that they didn't clock my commute time! that would still see me going back out to work in less then a month honestly.  Both employers had to re-advertise as they didn't get enough candidates to interview on the hiring of multiple roles at this time.

Gosh.. you completely ignored my original post and proceeded to tell everyone your life story.

For those above who cannot be furloughed and the company has been closed for lockdown.
Presumably your contracts state you will not be paid in these circumstances ?
Otherwise you should still be getting paid or laid off.
There is nothing in my contract regarding a pandemic or whether or not we will be paid during that time. I guess we will just have to wait until the 3rd now to see if the rules change regarding employment dates.

Honestly, I'm affected by this daft cut off date too and as a taxpayer all these years who has never claimed anything, it is so insulting.

I've paid NI and income tax for 50 years and there is no 'help' for me either...we all just have to get on with it as there has to be some sort of cut off point.
I thought you didn't have to pay NI after retirement age? I don't. If you do, maybe you should query it.

It is not daft though, it has to be set before the announcement, not after, as otherwise upon the announcement being made a company owner could employ all their friends and family and claim the money back from the government.
Actually when my company reopened there was absolutely no indication there would be another lockdown. These types of comments are unhelpful and tend to come from people who are luckily unaffected by these stupid rules. At the end of the day as a taxpayer you'd expect to be eligible for the same support everyone else is rather than being penalised for moving jobs on a particular date.

I am aware of this, I don't think the company is and I don't want to rock the boat incase I don't have a job to go back to. At the moment the position is being held for me for when they are allowed to reopen.

@CreditCardJunkie Well said, couldn't of put it any better. The position is apparently being held open for me too, although nothing in writing.

You are missing the point, although I expect you are doing so deliberately. The scheme had to be set up in a way which meant that it was not open to easy fraud, setting the RTI date after the announcement of the scheme (or extension of the scheme) would have made it incredibly easy to be abused, people who ran a company could employ their friends and family, put through the PAYE info and reclaim the money from HMRC. There has to be a cut off, it has to be verifiable and it has to be before the announcement, not after.

You feel a comment explaining why the scheme had to have a cut off date is "unhelpful" because it did not give you the answer you wanted. I also explained the need for the rules but you felt that was "stupid" because it did not give you the answer you wanted. You then went on to make an assumption about my personal circumstances because in your mind that in some way reinforced your position, which it did not.

I am a taxpayer, the 20/21 tax year will be the first year in nearly fifteen years that I have not been a net contributing taxpayer (the vast majority of people do not make a net contribution yearly, let alone over a lifetime), my income has fallen by around 90%, as an owner/director I am not eligible for SEISS and any possible CJRS claim for my salary would be minimal, with my PAYE salary representing less than 7% of my total income in a normal year. So no, I have not been "lucky", I have not received support from the government, that does not mean that I would become unable to recognise the rational need for the rules of CJRS.

Seems your looking an argument Matt and I for one can't really be bothered...I am sorry that you like many of us have had a substantial loss of income. Apparently we're all in this together so let's hope we can get out of it pretty soon.

After listening to Rishi Sunak's budget, there was still no mention of support for people employed after October 30th 2020. However, there is now support for newly SELF employed people... Am I missing something!?

Support for self employed people has now been extended to people who became self employed up to 31 March 2020, people employed via PAYE are already covered if they were employed up to and including 30 October 2020.

Yes, we were hoping that the new extension would cover newly employed people after the 30th October, as I started my employment in November and the company closed for lockdown in January.

Disappointed that he didn't introduce mandatory furlough for shielding workers who cannot work from home. I still think it's incredibly harsh sending out letters telling you to stay at home because your workplace is unsafe, but then not put any meaningful support in place to replace lost wages.

In my case, I've had to return to work in a public facing role, as after my mortgage holiday ended, the money I had coming from benefits wasn't enough to cover the cost of my housing, utility bills and basic food, so I could no longer afford to stay at home.
Here I go again on my own....
