  • It's hard to understand how entitled some tenants feel.
Your tenancy is secure ad you have protected rights to live there. The landlord has sent round a contractor to help you with your issue. What more do you expect/want?
Tenants should take a degree of responsibility for their homes just as any self-respecting person takes responsibility for various aspects of their life.
The internet these days abounds with sources of information, and utube clips on 'how to....' do/fix just about anything.
It is not the Tenants property, he does not own it. It is up to the landlord to fix it. Especially considering, the tenant is paying rent, its a business after all, therefore the landlord to pay to get it fixed.
I am not sure why landlord feel entitled to take the money but not uphold their side of the tenancy, does not make sense to me. We are not talking about something small like a broken fuse here, or a lightbulb going out. Imagine if the tenant tried to fix the boiler themselves and it caused more damage, then you will see the landlord chasing the tenant for money.

If I were you OP, I would withhold rent.

You seriously expect a tenant to start dismantling their boiler to try and repair it??? That's very likely to result in further damage to the landlord's property and/or serious injury to the tenant.
It's the landlord's legal responsibility to fix the boiler, not just to send round a random "contractor" to reset the breaker without investigating the cause of the fault at all.

  • It's hard to understand how entitled some tenants feel. Entitled in the sense they pay rent so can expect to have hot water?
Your tenancy is secure ad you have protected rights to live there. That has nothing to do with the question.
The landlord has sent round a contractor to help you with your issue. It's the landlords issue, they own the property. What more do you expect/want? Er, fix it. You're in for a big surprise, sending someone round to try and fix it and not fixing the problem doesn't absolve the landlord.
Tenants should take a degree of responsibility for their homes just as any self-respecting person takes responsibility for various aspects of their life. Agreed, subject to the terms of the rental agreement, any self respecting person would know that.
The internet these days abounds with sources of information, and utube clips on 'how to....' do/fix just about anything. Yup, I really don't know why any trades or professions exist anymore, it's frankly just laziness to employ anyone to do anything.

Absolutely do not withhold rent Op!
it's not that I disagree with the rest of the post, but withholding rent isn't the answer.

I agree with @lookstraightahead here. Witholding rent will lead to further issues and ruin your relationship with your landlord.

No one is expecting the OP to dismantle the boiler etc but maybe just perform some basic checks - For example -> https://cardiffplumbingandheating.co.uk/no-hot-water/

It's a wind up. Both this and the thread from the landlord are no doubt the same person.
