Kitchen worktop options

We've got 3 online/zoom/Teams appointments with the local kitchen places coming up and I'm trying to decide on worktop material.  Had one appt already and been quoted £3,917 for 5.25 metres of quartz worktop, broken down as:
£2,442 - 3.45m and 1.8m lengths of 38mm quartz worktop
£1,275 - custom worktop template and fitting
£189 - Template deposit

Is that about normal for worktops?  I've only ever had laminate worktops previously, granted they don't look as polished but the one we've inherited on our old kitchen (which has a matt finish) is at least 20 years old and still looks like new.  What other material options do we have, if we are possibly looking for something a bit cheaper that £4k?

We've previously chosen granite in a couple of houses and iroko in three including our current home.

I can't recall the price of the granite as it was a few years ago now, but most recently (2018) we paid around £1000 for 10m of iroko from worktop express. We went for the 40mm staves which we've had previously and been happy with.

DH fitted it with a bit of help from a local carpenter who did the butler sink cut out and one curved end.

I do remember that in our last-but-one house the iroko (from a local supplier) was about twice the price for a similar amount, 40mm staves again.

On our island (2800 x 1100mm) we chose Beton Cire (microcement), which DH did himself. This worked out fairly inexpensive as we were advised by the supplier to purchase multiple sample kits due to only requiring a small(ish) amount  ;) We're very pleased with how that turned out.....

  • Seems expensive to me. I had about  6m fitted including a 2.2m of 900mm width for a breakfast bar, upstands and a window sill 1100mm for £2900 + vat.
This was 2019 so I guess prices have gone up and was based on the south coast

Quartz is expensive but the mark up is also very high.

What are we looking at, Silestone?

correct. when I was picking my colour in the showroom, I was told that "these 10 slightly different shades of grey/white/beige" were about £3000, and "one white one was £2000" as it was on offer, and I happen to know it's still on offer to this day. needless to say, that price difference severely impacted my decision making.
  • I've been quoted £4.6k for Silestone and that includes £950 for template and fitting and an overmount sink to the tune of £300 that's already covered by another invoice. Inexplicably it doesn't actually say how much I am getting but by calculation its 2.04m2 plus 3.1m2 = 5.15m2 plus overage.

Magnets want £5.7k for the same thing  :D

Five years ago I paid £2300+VAT to a local granite company for 5 m run + 1.6 x 0.9m island in granite (they did quartz too).  Price included measuring up, installation, upstands, a window ledge, a corner join, holes for sink, tap and hob, plus drainer grooves.  I know quartz is more, but not that much more.

Try a granite company direct  we found kitchen companies quite a bit more expensive.
We had to wait for the kitchen to be fitted then they came out and measured and fitted it.

How did you get on, OP?

I'm going local and the price ranges but I expect to pay no more that £3.6k for 30mm quartz all in - that's >5.2sqm plus overage.

  • We are paying £4k for quartz.. The worktop length is about 3.5m but we are also doing the splash back all the way through along with a 900X1800 island. Cost includes templating and 30mm quartz and they come with a 10 year warranty.

Your splashback won't be 30mm though, will it?
