weeg said:It's something I've actually had done before without issue, but I will say that I work in scotland where we're dealing with sandstone, which is much easier to cut through (I'm talking literally stihl sawing a straight line where you want to top of the lintel) than some other stones, so you could well be right. Unless than mortar is crumbley half a wall can support itself in the short term.
Weeg, I am in Scotland, too (and also a "weeg" by birth, but not by residence!). What I am talking about is the difference between inserting a lintel in a wall made of stone blocks versus a rubble-stone wall, made of random sized and shaped field-stones. In a rubble wall, you quite often don't have two consistent "halfs" to work with and even if the wall has two layers, some larger stones may pin between the two layers. Also, field stone tending to be a mixed-bag of glacial and fluvial stones, are often a mix of sedimentary and igneous rocks, with all manner of angles, faces and edges that wouldn't lend themselves to attacking with a stihl saw.
