Fitting Laminate Flooring to the Stairs
togara
Hi,
We have recently had a fitter who has fitted laminate flooring to our stairs but the nosing he used does not run level with the laminate laid on the step - probably around a 5mm difference.
When we now walk down the stairs it is very uncomfortable to walk on, although it does look nice.
I am just trying to figure out if there is a solution to this as he has told me ripping it up now would cause damage to the stairs.
So potentially fitting a 5mm vinyl to level it off is one option that we may use.
Any advice or potential solutions?
Thanks

I think it's supposed to be like that, is the nosing not supposed to stop you slipping?
you'll probably get use to it!0 -
Most laminate/wood stair nosing is like that. Bit of waste of money putting laminate on your stairs then going on to cover it in vinyl. Has the laminate been glued down?togara said:Hi,

We supplied him with the laminate flooring and he bought a wood to add on the end to be the nosing.grumbler said:
Did he just fit it or supplied as well? There are special kits for stairs without any 5mm mismatch.togara said:but the nosing he used does not run level with the laminate laid on the step - probably around a 5mm difference.
Really I just want a wood finish (not the vinyl suggested by the fitter) and want to see if their is a good solution to make up that 5mm difference or if we just have to rip it up and go again with someone else.
Annoyed about the situation, but don’t want to get the wood or laminate finished stairs we wanted.0 -
If you walk in your bare feet or socks on then it is just not comfortable at all. Also we have a newborn and concerned when they get older or any other children in the house it could be a trip hazard also.fenwick458 said:I think it's supposed to be like that, is the nosing not supposed to stop you slipping?

Ultimately we are just not happy with how it has been finished and wanted a smooth finish or as smooth as possible.0 -
I have not seen any stairs myself where the laminate flooring or wood does not run smoothly with the nosing. He has manufactured a nosing himself and we now need to find something 5mm to fit over the laminate to make it smooth with the nosing or just rip it up.neilmcl said:

Would prefer to find a good solution ideally instead of ripping it up.0 -

Can't you sand the nosing to make it level with the laminate? Yes, it's a big job, but doable. And I'll get the 'manufacturer' of the nosing involved as it's his fault.togara said:

so was there no sort of indication that that you were going to be left with what you have now? you didn't get anything in writing beforehand, no pictures of written information pertaining to a raised egde of any sort?
if there was no mention of this on the quote, it's incomplete.
if there was a specific agreement to deliver a stair with zero visible lip on the edge of the stairs and they havent done this then they are in breach of contract
if you didn;t get a quote or never signed a contract then i'm afraid you have no comeback0 -
I said most, not every. Of course there's going to be examples where the nosing will be flush.grumbler said:
