Car insurance company demanding names drivers license

I took insurance out on a new car last week and the insurance company have emailed asking for me to
"Send us clear copies of both the front and back of the photo card(s)" of my name's drivers. It didn't mention this on my policy when I took it out and my mum is refusing as she's older and doesn't trust people holding these details. Can anyone advise if they're allowed to ask for these details please? It's Hastings Direct. Thanks!

You need to talk to your mum, her insurance will have these details on record somewhere almost certainly and probably hold all sorts of stuff on her. Does she really think an insurance company will use her driving license for nefarious purposes, as opposed to simply verifying you have used a genuine person to get your premium down? Ask them if they store the record or just file and delete.
If she still refuses, remove her from the policy and take the hit of increased cover, see if she will pay for it?

If they couldnt why would anyone bother to declare points on the licenses etc?

As already explained, its counter fraud measures to ensure all those on the policy are who you claim they are with the points etc declared. People are known to create fictitious people to drive down premiums.

Removing them now may not be an option to resolve the problem, assuming the policy has already started, as you'd only be entitled to remove them from today onwards and so the insurer can still ask for validation for the days they were already on cover for.

Does she have insurance of her own?
Even if she has, they won't necessarily have her licence details. I don't think I've ever been asked for my licence number by an insurer (possibly because I've avoided the real cheapo ones).

Increasingly license number is being asked for at point of quote, if you look at some of the aggregators they even promise potentially lower premiums if you provide it up front.

In this case however they are asking for an image of the license itself and its post sale so is a counter fraud check.

I named my sister on my Aviva policy 2 years ago to reduce my premium. I now find out she has not renewed her licence (age 70). Whoops
  • Cancel the policy and go with an insurer that doesn’t ask for copies of documents for your mum’s sake.

What on earth is her issue?
They have her name, address, date of birth, driving history... And Hastings quote form asks for driving licence number, with promises of "up to £70 discount", so I presume it was given...?

What else does she think can go wrong with a mainstream insurer having a copy of her licence?

Unless... she doesn't actually know she's a named driver...?

I'd rather assume the OP is genuine and has provided a named driver who is a genuine driver i.e. has a licence, insurance, use of a car, lives within a reasonable distance that she could actually use the OPs car. As opposed to naming someone who hasn't driven for 20 years and lives 500 miles away just because it could reduce the premium ;)

and to add to the above, yes comparison sites have started asking for the licence details when doing quotes. I don't recall ever having to provide mine either
