  • I cannot argue that it would be reasonable.  It would only be fair if the same thing happened to everybody else in the same situation, rather than piecemeal according to which electricity supplier you have chosen.

If that was the case people who were penalised could easily switch provider

Just heard similar stories, with the meter not being able to distinguish between generation and usage.
If it's the same wiring, you wouldn't expect a smart meter to solve any issues.

I have no issues with my SMETS2 meter and solar exports. People on FITs can elect to cease export payments and then claim SEG payments for all exported electricity. This does require a SMETS2 meter and a separate Export MPAN. Note you will still retain the generation part of the FIT

Are there potential financial advantages to doing this?

I guess there could be the export tariff is 3p?  SEG is about 5p .. I didn't know you keep your existing FIT i.e. separate them... I personally would not risk my existing FIT + deemed 50% export but as I said I didn't know this was an option

You are not risking your FIT. There are a number of Octopus customers who have gone this way; particularly, those who have added more solar or a battery for which FITs cannot be paid.

I have/had similar concerns about having a smart meter and when it recently came (nearly) to the crunch I contacted E.On to ask whether there are any issue (still) with PV/smart meters and what the position is re deemed v actual export, given that Malc who used to represent E.On on this forum had stated that their smart meters are not calibrated for export, so you remain on deemed.

The rather bland and poorly written reply I got from E.On Solar Team made all sorts of ridiculous statements that had nothing to do with the questions I had asked and then went on to say that I would move to actual export.  I asked them to answer my questions, rather than just pasting irrelevant comments together and again questioned the export point, stating that the last time I asked I was told that I would remain on deemed export.

They have not replied for the past 3 months or so!  No skin off my nose, as having or not having a smart meter will change nothing for me - I can already monitor import and export and know exactly what each device consumes...

I agree most people do not need a smart meter but if like me you are on a smart tariff then clearly you must have a smart meter.  I am with E-on for my FIT payments and am on deemed export rater than actual however my meter was not fitted by them so they dont know I have one... they do now.  I have not noticed anything on my meter that shows how much I export but it may be there somewhere.  If they put me on actual as stated above I will be £30 or so worse off a year.  My smart tariff from Octopus will easily save me that over a year,  In the poor solar months I can easily save at least £1 a day.
