If you don't think you can find a tactful way to approach your uncle to explain how you feel, then why not put the money into a savings account for a future date when he may really need the money, you can gift it to him in some way or be honest about what you have done. Or as his children are growing up there may be an occasion when they need something specific. It all depends on the dynamics of your relationship with your uncle, but you will have done this altruistically so no offence should be caused.
