I recieved a watch in the post today, it landed on the hardwood porch floor in a small white "christmas card" type paper envelope and must have been initially wrapped in one sheet of kitchen paper, but this wasn't fastened so the watch just fell out of that into into the envelope to rattle about!
I also sent a watch in the post today, It was in it's original box which was also packed with tissue paper so it couldn't move around. That was then placed in another box full of packing peanuts, and (because it came to 506g - typical!), that was placed inside another larger box also full of packing peanuts and sent by special delivery 1kg.
The one that arrived in the envelope did work though!
It would be just my luck if the one I sent arrives damaged!

Thanks, it's Mondial Ibiza according to the label.UpstartRaven said:That's nice yarn, Spoonie. What type?
It's just dawned on me they sent it as a large letter, despite being about 2 inches thick (not 2cm) - I am more and more flabbergasted they got away with it the more I think about it!! It was free postage so I'm not complaining, just ... confused!0 -

You can squish them and pull them through the 25mm template now. (You didn’t used to be allowed to). I think as long as a postie can get them through a letterbox they’re generally considered ok, but as usual it depends very much on which post office you go to (or if it was just stuffed into a post box) !Spoonie_Turtle said:

Ah, hand sorting and fitting through a letterbox makes sense. Apparently it came with an elastic band round it which explains how the ball managed to stay in there - I'm still impressed it got far enough for someone to put a band round it and didn't just fall out and get lost though. You can guarantee if one of us tried to send something like that, even providing the elastic band ourselves, it would backfire horriblyvacheron said:

I was once sent payment in cash for an Ebay item; it was sellotaped to a piece of paper in an ordinary envelope and the imprint of every coin was on the outside of the envelope like a brass rubbing so you could see how much was in there.4

Surcharging and pricing has nothing to do with letterbox dimensions.vacheron said:

Price in proportion was implemented to reflect handling costs through the network. Not delivery0 -
My comment was only to help Spoonie Turtle visualise why her package could have been considered as a large letter by RM due to their guidance that soft packages are allowed to be compressed and pushed and pulled through the 25mm slot in the template.custardy said:

I did not intend to imply that the logistics of being able to pass the envelope through a letterbox had any bearing on the establishment of the pricing structure.• The rich buy assets.

I read it once and understood it to mean that larger packages are more expensive to handle through the postal system and therefore cost more than smaller packages.coffeehound said:

A postcard or letter is small, doesn't weigh much and doesn't take up much room in sacks, handling rooms etc. It can probably be handled automatically for most of its journey. The larger the item the more costs involved in handling it.
A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".1
