    then that is you stuffed!

your best course is to negotiate, so if he is not willing to give you the refund and he doesn't want to move the project to 2022, then you could ask if he could give you a discount to book the 2022 appointment in advance, as you have already lost money because he is refusing to refund you the deposit and is not willining to move the appointment.

it means you will end up paying more for the work but it will still be cheaper than booking another photographer.

and next time, make sure you have a record of everything you send.  if you completed an online form, you could have printed out the page before you clicked the submit button.

Did that 'zap' straight through to him via a website? Do you know what day you sent it? Was there much 'free text' or was it just tickboxes?

And did he then respond by email?

Have you tried emailing to say that you DID give over 6 months notice to cancel as you emailed him asking to cancel in November, so are claiming a refund of £X on this basis?

If he then acknowledges that you did indeed cancel back in November, you therefore have it in writing.

(he doesn't need to know you haven't got a copy of the original.)
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
