TP-Link Archer C50 AC1200 Dual Band Wireless Cable Router

Many thanks, perfect, this router has access point mode which makes things a lot easier for the config.

The instruction manual from page 69 explains how to do this so it saves me typing out all the details:
    https://static.tp-link.com/2020/202009/20200911/1910012866_Archer C50(EU)_UG_V1.pdf

Follow the quick setup section 5.2 and in section 5.3 you will select access point mode. For 5.4 set up "Smart IP(DHCP) and in section 5.5 - 5.6 you will set up the wifi ID and password which can be the same as the main Sky Router if you wish or different - up to you.

"cable" in this context really means a cable internet service rather than something to connect to a bit of Cat6.

What is really needed in this application is a 'wifi access point', which is a much simpler and less expensive device.

Fortunately, most routers can be configured to operate as a wifi access point - as tallmansix has pointed out and helpfully given a link to the relevant instructions.

  • Ok thank you tallmansix. I will try what you suggest. How about the inline signal booster? What would you suggest if I still do not succeed?

You will succeed in getting an connection if you do what I suggested, you've already confirmed that the laptop worked at the end of the 80m cable just slower than expected.

Sorry to be constantly asking questions but the more info you provide the better - so my next question is when you said the internet wasn't as fast as expected with the laptop plugged into the 80m cable - can you give some numbers, ie what speed you get with a short cable and what speed you get with the 80m cable please?

Yes, one option is an inline signal booster with PoE - this option means you don't need to provide a separate power supply to the signal booster which would be a bit awkward 40 metres down the garden.  We are getting into £100+ extra spend here so I'd want to be careful that everything else is working properly and get some proper test results before I'd be buying anything else.

In theory 80 metres should work in ideal conditions - refer back to my other post about sources of interference, the AWG rating should be printed on the cable and the link speed as your laptop ethernet adaptor sees it eg 1000/1000 or 100/100 or 10/10.

Also you said you fitted the plugs yourself - apologies but no other way of wording this - are you experienced at doing this? Really good connections on the plugs are vital and they are fiddly things to deal with.

So you could buy the following as a suggestion:

    D-Link DPE-101GI Gigabit PoE Injector

Cudy POE15 Gigabit Outdoor Waterproof PoE+ Extender

I'd wait until you have the router configured as an access point first and worry about a booster later.  TBH there is something wrong somewhere if you cannot run full speed ethernet over 80m of cable because this is already shorter than the Ethernet specifications.  Boosters are intended for applications where more than 100m of cable is required.
  • Ok thanks for all your help, I will spend a morning there on Saturday and find out some more answer 👍🏼 Thanks again
  • I fitted the plugs either end and tested the continuity using the rj45 tester either end. All pairs are connected.
Did you connect the green and orange pairs to the correct pins?
