New House - Low Speed

Hi
I am about to move house but the best connection I can get in the new property is fttc 33mb. As there are 4 of us at home all using the internet, often for gaming, I am worried we are going to struggle. Could one solution be to have 2 accounts/suppliers and split it between us so that we are not all on the same account or would each account just be half the speed?

Not unless you have Virgin Media as second supplier .

You could see about getting a second FTTC line if there is capacity, but that will cost twice as much. 33Mb isn't necessarily slow, depends on usage patterns, I would see how it goes.0

Are they going to get additional phone line to the house?
Is Virgin an Option?
May be sign up to additional mobile internet or change your mobile tariff to unlimited data and use hotspot?0 -
I wish. Leaving behind a 200mb Virgin connection.JJ_Egan said:Not unless you have Virgin Media as second supplier .
I would consider paying twice if it was 2 x 33 mb. Just worried it would just slow it down anyway.littleboo said:You could see about getting a second FTTC line if there is capacity, but that will cost twice as much. 33Mb isn't necessarily slow, depends on usage patterns, I would see how it goes.0 -
Would 33mb cope with all 4 of us playing games at the same time ?0 -
33Mbit/s is not a bad speed and 3x what normal ADSL can do on a good day.
e.g. HD TV streaming takes about 5Mbit/s so 4 simultaneous streams will work fine with loads spare.
Ping speed and latency is often more important for gaming than up and download speed per se. Mobile networks latency can be worse than fixed line.
A second line install (hundreds) plus a contract (12, 18, 24 months?) would potentially provide 2 x 33 Mbit/s if there's capacity on the cabinet and elsewhere. Second lines are frequently used to provide a 'business' line separate to the 'domestic'. It may not be necessary to run a new cable, either, using a spare pair of conductors in the already in place. Otherwise provision would have an extremely extended timescale (while Covid restrictions remain).

Personally at that speed i would not be moving .But if you do its really a question of see what happens before spending money .0

I get 2.5mb, 33mb seems like luxury to me.0

2.5MB? Luxury! When I were a lad we had to make do with 2 baked bean cans connected with a bit of copper wire!No free lunch, and no free laptop

We was even poorer it was a bit of string for the connection . Followed by penny halfpenny a min dial up .
