Groan.  We don't normally have much of a problem with phone scammers, but this morning - literally within 5 minutes of each other - Mr S had the 'arrest warrant issued for unpaid taxes' and I had the 'there's a problem with your internet connection'.

Hope this isn't a sign of things to come - there's only so much fun one can have with these idiots.

Hi Yes I have read this on mumsnet apparently they scammed a student (daughter ) out of her student loan then she told her mum ! don't know why student thought she was in trouble anyway but it is scarey for the youngsters ....they are targeting the students as well ...I tend not to answer ... Always wise to check numbers via google  I just tap in the number and it  will come up and give details  if there are reports of a scam and you can report it and block it I can do it via spam alert  27726 there is also an HMRC scam going around as well ............

Problem is that nowadays many numbers are faked so lookup does not work .Likewise block xx number that does not exist or has been borrowed from a legitimate number often local .

Get a set of BT phones with trueCall/CallGuardian

Had some for years and not had a single unwanted call in that time

These are a pain for genuine callers.
I have a cheaper option, with my phone set to go to answering machine after two rings.

Why are they a pain ?

If the person in is my phone book they get straight through - if they aren't they just have to announce who they are.

Leaving an answerphone message is more of a pain (imo) than a simple announcement of who you are - or at best, no worse

I can't remember the last time I had a scam call because I simply I have always ignored calls from unknown numbers.  Eventually your number will drop of the list of victims which is sold on to the next scammer.  By answering you are confirming it is a live number and you can look forward to receiving more calls.

I rarely use my mobile due to poor signal and have never received anything other than genuine calls until today. In the space of three hours I was called three times by the 'I will be arrested for tax fraud' scammers. I only answered one of them, the second, and I remained silent. All three numbers began 020 and had similar but different remaining numbers.

Trying to think where they got my number or are they just ringing random numbers?  I did install the Nectar app just before these calls.
