    Often for a while before they cancel, the airline will stop accepting new bookings.  There are a couple of ways of checking: (a) try a dummy booking for your flight on their website, or (if you're a frequent flyer or know someone who is) (b) check expertflyer.com for flight availability.
    This is true - we knew, before we had the email, that they'd cancelled the flight as we've been looking at their web site daily for new bookings.

    the only fly in the ointment was that they moved us to the new flight. However there's been no problem in getting a refund
