It's actually very much frustrating. I've searched every cabinet in ikea and the only unit that is 80 cm wide that is not too deep is 106 cm high which is way too high so I am a bit stuck now.
Regarding fitting a door to the 40 cm deep unit the issue would be that the door is would be still go past the the architrave which would put me back to square one.0 -

Edit: Oh, I see you meant the depth would be too much... is there skirting board across the back of the alcove? Billy does have a cut out at the base so it can push up against the wall. We had to cut more to fit our deeper skirting but it works. By the looks of it, the doors add 2cm so would that be enough if you discount the skirting?0 -
Okay, so considering the issues mentioned with the Width differences, I am going to get the Billy 28cm depth bookshelf instead and add doors separately as per the above post.
My next issue would be that I have plug sockets on the wall around 25cm out going beyond where the bookshelf would finish. With a deeper shelf I was going to drill a cutout from the side of the bookshelf and a circle on the base unit to put the plugs through. With the reduced depth I think I will need to add battens to the wall to offset the bookshelf to go beyond the plug sockets otherwise the door will get in the way off the plug sockets.
This was supposed to be simple but has ended up anything but.
A quick thought. Would I be able to add a batton to the side of the 78cm unit and then use the flat plate to attach the base unit and the bookshelf securing from the batton to the bookshelf?0 -
I ordered the 28mm deep shelf now. I am going to be using a 68mm deep batten to offset the shelf from the wall to allow it to come further then the socket outlet. I was thinking 68mm deep plus 40mm into the wall so screws at around 110 mm long as seen below. Does that seem correct?

I managed to get the shelf built today
I put 2 pieces of Timber on the wall to offset the shelf and added doors to the bottom.
Only issues now are how I am going sort out the socket issue as doors are quite high and how to make the shelves more built in.
I was planning on getting moulding from wickes for the sides and fronts to give the shelf a more bulky look, a plinth for the bottom and a mould to put along the top.
Any tips would be great as I haven't done this before so am still not sure what materials to use and how to apply them. The walls being quite uneven on the sides complicates things further. Also if any knows of a paint that matches the shelf.
