Re; the garden gate turning green, I take it thats with the damp? You probably know to sand the gate down to remove the old paint and 'green' to get the best from the new paint.

Thanks Ian, I only had green in the first lockdown so that's what it was. No I sanded and filled the gate. It looked like it had been hewen with an axe! Never seen one so bad. I was going to have one made with a hole for a stained glass panel but that never happened because of constant restrictions. Have to get creative with what you've got.
It's really helped hearing others thoughts and visualising. A porch over the back door would break the space but there's no room for one.
Something detachable was an idea so I could remove it when workmen came. Thought of learning wire work but that takes too long. It's also where I put wrought iron shelves for my seeds in spring sun and shade and near the kitchen for watering.
So I'm thinking maybe (thanks Castor for the vote of confidence ;-) to stop the endless horizontal I paint the side part of each post and decorate with painted leaves. It should stop the eye going right down the line and not be so obtrusive that I get fed up with it. Well, that's tonights idea. May be rethinking by tomorrow if anyone thinks it's a bad idea ;-) It's having something you can live with.

What about some of the artificial plant fence screening? Primrose have a good selection (and I'm sure more options can be found via google) and it wouldn't have the issues of "real plants".

That would be 'thanks Catsacor'......... and I missed Sky, No, changing the colour would mean going darker. While the contrast would be good it would make the alley darker - could put stars and a moon on it I guess.
It would be fun to paint hills and sky with fluffy clouds, sheep etc but expensive and I think I might get fed up with it over time. Tempting though with a long boring year
Or I could just paint blue sky and fluffy clouds........no that would be silly. I'm trying to be sophisticated here.

Emmia thank you for the link. Our posts crossed
The whole panel is expensive, I know it was one of my first thoughts. I did buy some cheap light trellis and bits of ivy and some flowers but I call it wind alley for a reason and they were constantly being blown off or down.

Why?  We've painted all our fencing white and it spreads a lot more light round the garden.

Thanks, I've painted the large gate cream and that's boosted the area at one end :)
The problem with painting is largely how poor the fence slats are so I'd have to sponge 30ft very carefully and I'm not keen. One false slip and I'm in the dog house with my neighbour.

Thanks Swingaloo. I will if I can but sometimes Pinterest won't let you look unless you join and I'm not happy with their T&C's.
