OK so I have the usual bungalow windy alley down the side. The fence is my neighbours who kindly painted it in her favourite orange preservative which goes around the back too. It's not my favourite or even my all right but it's cheap panels, possibily the original 20yr built ones with bends and gaps.
She is 86 but a sharp & likes bright colours and fun things though you wouldn't think so except from her planters and christmas decs.
As you can see from the photo from my back door I get the orange fence and orange bricks as the view from my kitchen and bathroom.
I've thought of using blue sky film on the windows but that just makes them harder to clean. I've painted the gate at the end cream to brighten the space and am growing a climbing rose over that end. She likes that, looks good from her front door. Also she likes the coloured fairy lights I put on the top.
I've dismissed - plants as soil a long way down and main drains run this way. Every time you passed you'd get wet from the foliage and it would catch in the wheelbarrow.
It's too much to paint because it goes to the back.
I'm artistic and I did think of painting rambling roses or trees
I thought of doing some plant Pyrography.
I hate seeing this orange path to sky every time I look or walk out. If it wasn't something that damaged the fence so they could call 'your fault' if they blew down and didn't cause permenant damage I think they would be ok with it but I could use some fresh ideas if you'd be so kind.

A neighbour here has put a couple of outdoor mirrors with wrought iron frames on a nondescript fence - it looks quite interesting - in a good way

I like the idea Coffeehound. I'm not sure about anything breakable when I'm getting the wheelbarrow through with a bag of compost. Also they'd just reflect the orange bricks on my house wouldn't they? How did he do it?
I did put an African carved panel bought for £3 from a charity shop but the weight on these thin fences and the wind was a problem.
Now I'm trying to find a home for a large carved panel.

I'd probably go with your mural idea, doing one panel at a time until I'd had enough.

Or what about a tree mural like the one on this site  you could change it to suit you, adding fruit or flowers, or a blue sky background or similar, depending on taste/available time.

I believe you can get plastic garden mirrors which work well and shouldn't be too heavy.  Alternatively, could you put in a couple of fence posts to support your curved panel?

Good luck, it's an interesting project.

Could you paint with a colour that you prefer along the passageway by your house and segue into the orange colour with an artistic pattern? Or mark the change with a plant where it opens up so there is space to get past with a wheelbarrow and/or enough soil?

I think I'm right in thinking that your neighbour is ok with you painting your side of her fence? I only ask due to the possibility of your colour running onto her side of the fence and spoiling her side. Always best to check, as it would seem you're on good terms with her and pretty sure you don't want to fall out should something go wrong.

" mark the change with a plant where it opens up" it's a thought and I could have something that would grow along a support but it wouldn't come near to meeting in the long alley.
The end of the passage has 4 drain covers, two are from my neighbours and the other a joint tunnel so planting there other than small is not an option unfortunately.
I actually have 7 drains which has been the driving force in the garden :/

Ian, I haven't asked and just painting wouldn't be an option because of the distorted wefts and none of it fits tight. I'd have to sponge paint.
I'm slowly bringing her around to change having put a trellis arch with rose and planted carefully along our boundary by measurement. She now comes out of her front door to a garden she doesn't have to tend and I weed her gravel. A trellis with rose and lights is to 'keep the cats out' and she loves it.
Even ok with the runners from my raspberries breaking through though I hope to stop that if its ever dry or warm enough.
The garden gate turned green in the last lockdown, It's going to be cream this one to show off the rose :)
Yes, if it doesn't affect her or encroach she's fine and I think, quite enjoying the ride
