Selling car and HPI check mileage discrepancy

Hi I am the second owner of a car and i am trying to sell it. I had agreed a price with a garage but when they did an HPI check they said there was a mileage discrepancy and need to send some paperwork to resolve. I have received a letter from HPI to confirm mileage but havent heard anything since. This was 2 weeks ago. I have chased the garage and HPI and i have been told they are awaiting for another company to complete the details. I am in limbo and dont know what the issue is and how to resolve it. Has anyone been in this position? My car is a 17 plate and i am the second owner.

What is the discrepancy? Do you know when it occurred and if it was before your ownership? Presumably a 17 plate has only just had 1 MOT?
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
  • I dont know what the discrepancy is, i have asked but no one will tell me. I have made a mistake and actually got two MOTs last year, one in Feb 2020 and one in Sept 2020.  I am just not sure what to do to resolve the issue. Thank you for your reply!
  • What mileage was recorded at those times?
  • What did the HPI letter you received say?
Have you considered doing your own check?
Perhaps this trader doesn't want to buy or is trying to engineer a discount.
I'm terms of MSE, I always thought a trader would not give you good price. Private sale might get you more but with more hassle..

So do a online MOT check should show the mileage.

  • Thank you everyone for your comments. I bought the HPI check and now know that the issue was that the mileage entered by the person  who had the car before me BVRLA registered the car at 11771 miles in 2018, i bought the car in 2019 at 9962 miles. Now i know the issue who do i go to in order to resolve it? Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

So, what is the true mileage?
  • So was it clocked before you bought it?

So the question is now whether the 11,771 figure in 2018 was an error, or whether the car was clocked some time between a correct 11,771 figure in 2018. and the lower 2019 9,962 figure.

It seems unlikely to have been clocked by just 1,800 miles. But what other mileage was covered on top of that?

Does it have a digital odometer that can be switched between miles and km? 11,771 km is 7,314 miles.

2017 car used as a hire car and sold after 11,771 miles in 2018 at a year old seems reasonable.
So does the switched km / miles data error...

Sold again in 2019, so now two years old and a very low mileage entered at 9,962 in the V5 submission.  As Adrian said, unlikely to "clock" a car by just 1,800 miles.  If the car had done a high mileage in that second year, it would be rather foolish to "clock" the car back to something below the 2018 mileage which the owner could reasonably suspect was recorded externally.

So, a mistake seem likely.  Could the true mileage in 2018 have been 19,962?  or 29,962?  8k or 18k both reasonable for a privately owned car in a year.  Error entering that in the V5 when returned, for whatever reason...

What mileage did the car display when the OP purchased?  What did the advert say?  Is this mileage recorded anywhere that gives evidence?

What type of car is it and why is it racing through owners?  Business owned then two private owners moved it on in relatively quick succession - I'd be asking if there was something wrong with the car.  Does depend though, if it was a two-seater and babies arrive, the quicker swap is more plausible.
