EON next

Moved into a new house on Friday and were told that the house was supplied by NPower but on trying to set up new account it seems this is now EON Next. Their website instructs you to email with details to set up an account which I did.
Received an email a few days later saying they can only set up an account if we can prove we are the legal owners or have a tenancy agreement. I have moved house at least 10 times in 15 years and never once been asked to prove I live somewhere when signing up to an energy company. Problem we have is that we don’t yet have anything to prove we own the house (lots of paperwork but won’t get the new title deeds yet). So we can’t switch company and will end up paying for weeks/months of standard rate energy charges when they finally set us up an account. Am guessing I can’t even switch to another company until I am officially on the account here.
Has anyone ever had this with an energy company?

  • E.oN Next is a new energy company within The E.oN Group. It uses Octopus Energy’s billing system known as Kraken. When I moved into my new build 2 years ago, I just sent the supplier a copy of a solictor’s letter confirming the purchase date. I then initiated a switch.
  • Thanks Dolor - they wouldn’t accept my completion statement and said they would only accept title deeds. I just don’t understand why I have to prove anything - I am asking to pay them money!!! I’ve changed all other things council tax; water; driving licence etc etc and not one company has asked for proof.

I'm not sure if things have changed but when I bought this flat, I didn't get sight of the title deeds until after I had paid off the mortgage.  The Building Society kept them until then.

Perhaps the previous occupant had a debt and didn't give notice that they were leaving, so perhaps E.On Next suspect that they have applied as a fake new occupier in order to wipe the slate clean?
Make sure you are on the Electoral Roll and give E.On next the forwarding address of the previous occupant if you have it.

Many people don't have title deeds nowadays. I certainly haven't - ownership title is held at the Land Registry

Title deeds are stored electronically on the land registry since 1990, but whoever acted for you in the sale will have had a copy of them that they should have offered you.
I doubt any lenders still have any title deeds in storage, most of them seem to have been thrown away after they were registered.
    You can obtain copies https://www.gov.uk/get-information-about-property-and-land/copies-of-deeds

They can't possibly require the actual deeds, something like TR1 form or similar should be sufficient. It makes sense to require *something* to prove your connection to the property, but they should have a range of acceptable documents. Check their website.

EON Next... Have been checking my first couple of bills since they moved me across from EON - still on the same tariff thanks to MSEcheap energy club but now new logo and new website.  Only because I have always kept a spreadsheet (sad I know) to make sure the charges are correct, I noticed the opening electricity reading was wrong. 'old EON' have billed correctly but passed a different opening reading to Eon Next which has resulted in an overcharge (or double charge). Its only small - about £15 and the gas side seems correct.

I've contacted them and they have made the correction - but no explanation of how it occurred so it could be widespread. If this was happening to lots of transferred customers, EON Next profits would certainly go up!

so... Always check closing and opening meter readings when you move or are moved from one supplier to another would be my recommendation

Eon & Eon Next.  What a calamity.  They changed my account over a couple of weeks ago and still I cannot view any of my account history.  It says I haven't got a Direct Debit set up yet they took a payment on 2nd June.  I got an email this morning asking for a meter reading yet I have a smart meter and haven't had to submit a reading for years.  By all accounts, I have a SMERTS1 meter which can't take a change of supplier.  This ridiculous situation has occurred because Eon and Eon Next are SEPARATE suppliers according to my meter and I now have to wait for an upgrade to a SMERTS2 meter.  I am refusing to submit readings meanwhile.  What a ridiculous situation - someone needs to walk the plank

What manufacturer/model of SMETS meter do you have? The Kraken Technologies platform that underpins E.oN Next is an Octopus Energy product which works well with Secure SMETS1 meters (most of which have been adopted by and enrolled with The DCC). This could well be nothing more than a security certificate issue as only one ‘supplier’ can access a smart meter for security reasons,
