  • There should be a sticky stating that everyone that asks for help should be posting full details of the device in question. Absolutely ridiculous that one assumes that every device is exactly the same.

I don't think you should be concerned about not being to upgrade, but I would certainly encourage all machines with internet access to be as secure as possible - this also includes using the most up-to-date and stable build of operating system.
As above, post the make and model of your laptop so we can better help you.
  • Dell Inspiron 1720, about 12 years old upgraded with SSD and max memory, Intel Core 2 Duo T7100 2X1.8 GHz, it upgraded to Win 10 about a year ago with no problems. Mainly worried about security if not upgrading
  • This YouTube upload may be worth a watch to get a handle on any increased risk by not updating.

Can you run the Dell support program to update the Bios?
  • Unfortunately it looks like Dell don't support Windows 10 on that laptop, it looks unlikely that even if you are on the latest BIOS A09 from 2011 then it still will give the update problems.

A least check you are on the latest BIOS anyway with the Dell Update tool or the online version:

Shame really because many laptops of that era still work well on Windows 10.

The question is more whether there would be a BIOS update available for a 12 year old computer.  Most manufacturers stop issuing them after 18 months or so.
The service tag will determine what's available on the website.  But a quick Google based on the model suggests the last BIOS update was in 2008, so the machine may be older than the OP thinks, even though they'd have had it after manufacture, obviously.
  • That Dell Inspiron 1720 looks very similar to a Dell Inspiron 1525 that I maintain for a friend.  And the Dell Inspiron 1525 does indeed run Windows 10 with no problems, even when, by the owner's own admission, the laptop is antiquated
If you want to be cautious, then use the free version of Macrium Reflect to create an image of how your system stands just now.  Then you have something to fall back on if things go wrong.
  • thanks for all the replies,I downloaded the Dell support pack and it checked my system and found no problems and my bios is the last one A09. Pity I may start looking for a new computer, I like this 17" HD screen and the large keyboard with number pad and since I fitted the SSD it is fast enough for my use. I will just keep everything backed up and keep an eye out for a suitable replacement, might even consider a desktop Thanks again to all who answered my request.
