Does Trading Standards still exist at local level?

I've been having a problem with a leaking conservatory. I've phone through to what I believed was Trading standards in my local council, greater London.
I was put through to somewhere in the north of the UK, consumers help line.
The above banged on about consumer rights and other stuff about writing to the builder about this, that and the other acts.

Are there local council Trading Standard services and how do I find them?
Thanks.

There are local trading standards office but your local council will not be "greater London" but the appropriate borough.

About half way down CTSI Consumer Support & Advice (tradingstandards.uk) there is a postcode lookup for your local council's office. Your local council may well have chosen to outsource various elements though. Looking at our local London Borough site they advise they dont give consumer advice and tell you to call the CAB instead.

Bear in mind it isn't Trading Standards' job to sort out your problems for you.
  • What's the nature of the problem that's made you consider Trading Standards as an avenue?
  • Nature of the problem leaking roof as per my original post here. Actually leaked third time. Every time getting them to
turn up is a big fight, upset, unreasonable length of time for them to attend.

Th poster that said TS can't do everything for me, I never said I wanted them to.

I didn't say you had. But you haven't told us what you are expecting them to do.

I'm not sure that Trading Standards are the people you want. They might investigate illegal business activities, or unfair trading practices, and they might prosecute businesses - but they won't help you get your roof repaired or get you a refund etc.

Unless perhaps you want to report the company for being scammers, for example. In that case, I believe they might note the name of the company, plus your comments. If the same company name is then mentioned by enough other people, they might start an investigation.

Trading standards aren't going to help you with this. You need to sort it out with the company yourself. If they're not able to resolve the issue then your next step is the small claims court process.

What are you considering an unreasonable length of time?  As others have intimated, TS are not the right avenue for this.   The company is responding, it's not as if they're running a scam or have disappeared with your money.

Post a summary of the situation as it's unfolded so far, with approximate dates, and we may be able to advise a course of action.
