I'm in the -1.5 to -2.5 range in 2021 and the 0.5 to 1.5 range in 2022 so that's a 3 C difference - which has got to be quite significant.   In 2021 I would have needed at least 15 % more energy to keep the house warm and the heat pump would have run less efficiently because of the lower outside temperatures.

And it's not just the outside temp difference that plays a part as i believe  you have also mentioned solar gain from south facing windows.. https://www.bbc.com/weather/features/60216565

Both my real world figures and my heat loss model suggest that my house needs about 45% more energy at 2C average daily temperature than at 5C; roughly 39 kWh vs 27 kWh.  The ASHP is delivering about 19% more energy due to the lower temperature, the rest is down to a poorer COP.

I think RR's efficiency gains are still significant even after accounting for the milder weather.
  • Yes, I looked at February 2021 and found that the average temperature where I live was similar to January 2022.  In February 2021 my average consumption was 40.6 kWh per day (cf. 50.3 kWh/day Jan. 21, 26.9 kWh/day Jan. 22).

I've just registered an interest in Octopus heat pumps. They start installing in April although only London and the Home Counties, initially. They probably won't get round to West Wales for years, but worth a punt, I suppose.
  • More worth a punt if you don't have access to mains gas, so London and the Home Counties seem the worst choice of region.

Yes, it does seem odd. I suppose it is because their training place is near London.

The latest Ofgem cap increases have (I think) closed the price differential per kWh to about 4:1 in favour of gas.  The difference between an old wheezy gas boiler and a shiny new heat pump might not be that different in terms of running costs, if run properly.  Purchase price is another matter of course.

Oil is currently 63p/litre so approx 6pkWh. If it remains at that price until April(and that is a big 'if'!) it will be marginally cheaper than gas.

Those with Oil CH should surely be thinking about filling their tanks(and any spare containers!) NOW.

I've just found our that Vaillant are now using R290 (propane) refrigerant in their aroTHERM range of ASHPs. Propane has magnitudes lower greenhouse gas effect than HFCs, in the event of a leak, and you get a higher SCOP. Win-win.
