I bought a Heat Pump

  • ... Basically the heat pump is a fridge condenser in reverse ( a lot of refrigeration suppliers are going into making them) and just as a fridge has to work harder when it is hot outside, a heat pump has to work harder when it is cold outside. So it works least well when you need it the most.

A fridge has to work harder when it's hot inside the room where the fridge is.  An Air Source Heat Pump has to work harder when it's cold outside.  But my fridge still keeps its contents cold in hot weather; although it works harder it does not work less well.   We have not had a really cold spell since I got my ASHP but it is rated to perform down to -15 C.  As with the fridge, in cold weather it works harder but it still works perfectly well.

  • My 2012 vintage oil boiler went wrong about twice a year for the 2 years after I inherited it.  Fortunately I had a service contract but the last time I renewed it cost me £258 for the year.  That was one of the factors that put me off oil.

    2021 (kWh)

These figures are the amount of energy consumed each day by my ASHP, averaged over the month.  The figures are for both heating and hot water (but over the sunnier months I use spare power from my solar panels, when available, to heat the hot water cylinder via the immersion heater).  I thought this data might be of interest to anyone else who monitors their power use for heating.

Interesting; looks like we've had a very mild November and December.  What's the total kWh for the year?
  • I don't think November or December were particularly mild where I am (except for the last two day in December).  When I first got the heat pump in mid December 2020 I kept the house a bit warmer than I usually do, just to prove to myself that the heat pump could manage to do that.  After a while my wife complained that it was too hot so I set it back to normal but that might have influenced the January consumption.

My consumption from 31/12/20 to 30/12/21 inclusive was 6710 kWh.

I've been watching this for a while and here is my info on last year as a comparison my total energy consumption as we cant accurately split out the consumption of the heatpump.

My guess is that its around 50% of our annual consumption. Obviously it chews through leccy in the winter but looking at the June-August figures our baseline (incl hot water) is around 9kwh/day

Interestingly at 8411kwh we used around 1200kwh more than than our ten year average which is 7200kwh) with Jan-May and December up a fair bit (last year we used 7225kwh)

    Dec - 1390 - 44.8/day
    Jan - 1375, - 44.3
    Feb - 1059  - 37.8
    Mar - 912     - 29.4
    Apr - 833      - 27.8
    May - 470     - 15.2
    Jun - 266      - 8.7
    Jul - 286       - 9.2
    Aug - 284     - 9.2
    Sep - 380     - 12.6
    Oct - 457      - 14.7
    Nov - 868     - 28.9
    Dec - 1201   - 38.74

Don't know how relevant my figures are as our ashp's are A2A so refer to space heating only, however, I've also added approx DHW figures based on the immersion being on 1.5 hrs each day, circa 5 kWh's.
Our total consumption for 2021 was 9564 kWh's of which 1514 was for EV leaving 8050 kWh's for domestic use.
PV generation 8756, consumed 4349(50.4%), exported 4416, imported 5215 kWh's @12.45p/kWh which surpassed Fit, Export return by £39.16.
I wonder what the next twelve months of generation, consumption and costs will turn out to be?
Edit. Meant to add - I doubt we are likely to match Matelodave's average of 7200 kWh's, an impressive figure!

  • My house drew 8232 kWh from the grid in the period that my heat pump used 6931 kWh.   But I have solar panels without enough metering to know how much solar power was used and how much was exported.   In a November before I had neither solar panels nor the ASHP nor any form of electrical heating my average electricity consumption was 8.4 kWh per day.
