Yes with £65k in savings they have to pay, thats why social care in the UK is a joke because well off people think someone else should pay for their care <shakes head>
That's why you need to spend it, no point admiring it or being pro-active against others who had'nt bothered.
I’ve visited people in a funded home and I’ve visited people in private paying homes and I know which one I want to go to.

I would've thought that it's too late to do that now as the assessment has already taken place so they know that your parents are sitting on £65k.  Or do you think that you can just 'hide' half of it and ask for another assessment?
I think you've missed the point.  No-one is "hiding" anything.  Husband has half and wife has half, if they split the joint account into separate accounts, and only the WIFE'S half is taken into account for HER care, which is as it should be.  The husband's half is available for his care if he needs it.  This arrangement is suggested by AgeUK etc.

The reason social care funding in the UK is a "joke" is because some people make no provision for their care  and dont give a damn who pays their bills.
£65 k isnt that much, why, over a lifetime it probably wouldnt pay for a packet of Woodbines every day.

Yes, I think you're right.  I had missed the fact that the OP said in their opening post:

"The council have done a means test and have decided that based on the financial assets they both hold in the joint accounts (totalling just over over £65k), that she doesn't qualify for any contributions towards care costs as her half exceeds the £23500 threshold."

So it would be pointless splitting their accounts now as the Council were not taking his half into account anyway.
