mum died, nothing said of shares

my mother passed away in 2011 and just last week received a letter regarding shares and unpaid dividends. my mother hadn’t received any information as we had moved address in 2001 and hadn’t mentioned anything of shares (maybe through her illness or lack of knowledge in shares) if anyone who has been through a similar situation can please give an insight as i am totally confused. this would mean my mother has unpaid divedend going back to 2001. i am an executor on her will and through not having any savings had most of her debts written off- not sure what will come of that

You may do better to ask a moderator to move this to the Wills and Probate sub-board. 
I suspect that a lot will depend on how much the shares (and any unpaid dividends) are worth - and how big your mum's original estate was, to work out whether there is any back tax or anything of that kind to pay.

my mum didnt have any estate but still made a will, she never disclosed any shares as this would have made up some kind of estate to contribute to any debts to be paid which was something she had requested in her will. i was told by the registrar that my mum has 161 shares in sainsburys.... i tried working it out but it only lets me go back to 2007. i also read that to claim unpaid divedends past 12 years is a waste of time.... and thankyou i will look into that
