17 months on from posting my question I am writing to thank everybody for their helpful suggestions and to say how the problem has been resolved.

EssexExile and merchcon55 both made excellent points and the maths argument of price against usage won me over.

I stayed with 3Mobile but their prices dramatically increased earlier this month (07.22) so I looked again. There are a lot of deals out there but perhaps being a post war baby of the austere 1950's has left me uncomfortable paying for things I do not use? 

It seems that I'm not the only person of my generation who likes a mobile for the same sort of use and at the risk of sounding like an advert 'RWG Mobile', who are based in Wales - there's lovely - have recognised this and provided us with a solution. For a one-off £5 payment I now have a SIM giving me 50 texts, 50 minutes and 250Mb data per month. That is it...no more payments...that £5 was it. I can live with having a little bit of data I don't need but perhaps I'll give it a go one day.
 
3Mobile were very nice to deal with, repaying my credit and offering me a good deal to stay but it paled against RWG's Free a/c.

The transfer of my number was swift but what really stands out from the whole affair was RWG's truly wonderful customer service and their recognition of my demographic as a valued customer.
