They put too much oil in the tank

Options
I recently ordered 500ltr of home heating oil via boiler juice. The oil company allocated delivered on time.  A couple of days later they called me and said they'd delivered 700ltrs ( 200 more by mistake). I cannot visually confirm this and there's no paperwork. They are hastling me for payment and say they'll send proof I've received it.  How can they do that?  The driver could have put 200ltrs in his mates tank and said he delivered it here..where do I stand? Thanks

They usually give you a delivery note which you (normally) would sign as it says x litres at whatever the pence per litre is. Ask them for proof.

The difference between 500 and 700 litres should be noticeable.  What method do you use to check your oil?  Watchman? Apollo?  stick?
Normally, you are given a printout from the tanker that shows how much oil has been put in.  What does that say?

  • I just binned the printout, it's a new 1250 tank there's no way of me telling if he put 550 600 650 or 700. But that's not my question, prices are hi and that's why I only put 500 in, waiting for the spring and prices to fall. Don't see why I would pay top whack for oil I never ordered?

Is it more or less than half full?

  • Thanks useful and constructive. Though ordering 500 and getting 300 next time still mend I'm paying winter price for the extra 200 🤔 I'm an honest kind of guy and if they prove they did I'll offer a reasonable price for the extra oil.. not worried about them black listing me as there plenty of others about. 👍

When I get oil delivered I always check the printout to ensure correct delivery and keep it to remember me what price it was.
Perhaps next time you could do this? The print out tells you exactly what was put in! 500L or 700L?

Did you think it was too good to be true? LOL

New 1250L tank 500L in, not up to halfway, 700L in, more  than halfway. Check your tank.

  • Your logic works if you know how much was on the tank before topping it up. But thanks for your suggestion🤔 my tank is under 2ft of snow right now.. it'll keep..🤣

Asking for a discount so you pay the expected summer rates seems easier for them than collecting the 200l and might be worth asking for.

  • Once they've proven they did, then that's my intention. Cheers

A reputable supplier should be able to give you a copy of the log from the dispensing meter on the tanker.  They need this for their own accounting and audit purposes, so it should be available.  This will be date and time stamped, so you should be able to tie it up with when you had your delivery.
