Ownership of the Meters changes to whatever supplier you have at any given time

    Thanks dogshome
If you please another Q - is it possible to have a Dumb  (not connected data wise to my supplier) Gas Smart Meter ( off the Net ) fitted downstream of the Main meter for my own use ie to monitor my gas usage - real time...joe

Unless the smart meter is fully commissioned then it will not transmit data to the HAN (the IHD) or to the DCC. For it to be commissioned you also need an electricity smart meter which is then paired to the smart gas meter. A comms hub sits above the electricity meter and it is powered by it (at no cost to the homeowner). I do not believe that any supplier will fit an additional meter in the way that you suggest. Smart meters no longer connect to manufacturers/suppliers: they connect to a central hub. Suppliers access this hub to obtain readings.

To monitor gas usage, you could look at an optical reader such as NorthQ. This device counts the number of times that a blob of silver in either the number 0, 6.or 9 rotates.

Alternatively, you could just get smart meters fitted and get usage data similar to this:

I don't suppose there's anything to stop you buying your own gas meter, and getting a gas safe registered plumber to install it.  Don't expect your supplier to care what it reads, though.
Real time monitoring may be more complicated, though, unless you mean watching the dials go round.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

I have always resisted having a smart meter (My meter was here when I came here 25 years ago) I have heard smart meters will not work here as no or very poor connection

According to BEIS documents, as suppliers have a legal right of entry to replace end-of-life meters, the Government has agreed that suppliers can fit smart meters. Smart meter communications come in various forms depending on where you live. I live in Shropshire and my meter is capable of making a direct connection via an O2 mast or if this is not possible, the meter will connect to a wide area network (WAN) and my data will be passed across a number of other meters until a connection is found. Smart meters in the North use a long range radio connection.

I tried to get a Smart meter but was told that there was no mobile phone signal so it wouldn't work. Is the "long range radio signal" connection used only in the North? Or is it only certain suppliers?

Yes the "long range signal" is provided by Arqiva on a dedicated UHF radio network in the North of England and Scotland.  The rest of the UK is provided by the O2 mobile phone network.

Hi there, please could you tell me what the acronyms you used mean? HAN (the IHD) or to the DCC. Thank you

HAN - Home Area Network, a wireless network (similar to wifi) that connects the gas meter and IHD to the comms hub. The comms hub has a wired connection to the electricity meter.
IHD - In Home Device, the device that you are given to show your energy use and various other information.
DCC - the Data Communications Company, the organisation with the licence to operate the UK's smart meter network.
