I have been considering a water meter (or at least the 2 year 'trial' option) and have just got my annual statement from UU
Current UU bill shows annually it will be £352.79* total of fixed + standing charge for Fresh Water and £442.52 fixed cost for Wastewater.
If I got a water meter then would this only replace/recalculate the 'Fresh Water' supply bit of my bill - if so then im already paying less than £1/day for fresh water so it may not be a significant saving.
Thanks

*EDIT - corrected £252.79 to £352.79.

Our water supplier (Wessex) simply doubles the water charge based on the assumption that it will all go back down their drains.

You pay a fixed charge for water and a charge for each cubic metre(m3) you use.
    PLUS
A fixed charge for sewerage and a charge on every cubic meter you have used.
So if you use, say, 100m3 a year(average consumption for 2 people) you would pay
    Water £25.96 + £182.80 = £208.76
    Sewerage £38.25(£5.16 + £33.09) + £125.20 = £163.45
    Total = £372.21
If you don't have a soakaway and your water from gutters and garden etc enter the sewerage system you will pay an extra £70.37
You can determine if you will pay that charge by looking at your current bill
If you are paying that charge you should see if you can claim relief. see Surface Water Drainage(SWD) on this forum

Seems a bit much to charge £190 more for waste water than fresh water.  Do all your surface water drainpipes run into the sewer?  Even so, it would seem a high charge.  I thought water companies charged about the same for wastewater as fresh water on the basis that 'what goes in must come out'.
@Mickey666 - apologies, I corrected my typo - the difference between the two figures is now round 90 and not 190.

In any case, it does seem that I would save money by having a water meter fitted.  The only question is by how much as I dont yet know whether we will be back to 4 adults in the house when Uni finishes as Covid seems has thrown a curve ball into various plans.
    Thanks to all.

We us around 70-75cu.m a year and that costs us around £330-£350 a year metered (Anglian Water). Just the standing charges on RV billing would cost us £544 plus whatever the rate in the £ is, so we are saving well over £220 by being on a meter.

We'd have to more than double our water consumption to at least 150cum/year for metered billing to cost us more than RV billing. (even this year when we had a leak in an underground pipe we were still better off, apart from the repair cost)
